Some real gems here. I especially like the tip of making beats with certain pre restrictions to get out of your comfort zone. Every time I have tried to make a beat that sounds like another beat (not copying, just emulating the vibe) i have never succeeded. I always ended up falling back on what was easy & comfortable and ultimately was unable to accomplish. Definitely something I'm going to reimplement

Great video I breakdown the production process as well to keep from getting overwhelmed. Monday’s may be learn some basic music theory or study the history of a genre and it’s common elements, Tuesday practice chord progression and melodies, Wednesday drum programming, Thursday arrangement/ FX, Friday mix the song or songs etc I try to do a song or two a week as my goal because of time.

I think learning a instrument is the KEY in making better beats. People say they love music but then say the dont need to learn about music to make beats. Music theory is a great way to jump start your beat making career. Thats like saying you like a girl but you don't want to know about her.

I have a hybrid of the issues described. I have a hard time sticking to the genre/style at hand because I'm always trying to push frontiers in experimentation, and those experimental efforts, as fun as they may be, don't usually fit into what I'm specifically trying to do. The end result may be cool sometimes, but it isn't what I was trying to achieve.

I just started using reference tracks of songs similar to what I want to achieve, and I refer back to them occasionally to stay on track. It actually helps me a lot. I've always had attention issues and I'm easily distracted by shiny objects haha. Recreating a beat as an exercise sounds like fun. I'm going to give it a try tonight. West coast style.

I know people that have been making beats and producing in the hood for 10 years plus but never want to try something different so they never improve or get anywhere with their music lately my beats remind me of theirs and I cant stand it. There is always room for evolving your beats and your mind if you dont listen then you will never learn anything new or evolve. You are the man Navie
