Great Horned Owls

With 35 Great Horned Owls being admitted to our rehabilitation section last year, they are yet another commonly seen owl in Alabama. Ophelia was brought to the Southeastern Raptor Center in 2002 as a human imprint. A typical lifespan for a Great Horned Owl is approximately 13 years.

I was recently visiting my family in Pasadena, CA and every night, I'd hear the hooting of a great horned owl in one of the nearby trees. They really are magnificent birds.

I live in Hoover, AL near Birmingham and we have woods in the backyard and at the side of our house. I’ve seen owls, hawks and deer in our woods. I also saw some other bird out back that was big and had a huge wingspan. I couldn’t tell what kind of bird it was though. Saw it only once, but that was enough for me to remember it always.

I love this owl, she just keeps going. It's such a comforting sound to hear and to watch them make it.

Fun fact is that their legs are actually longer. So technically the owls legs are hidden underneath it's feathers. They have long legs and they sit squatting
