Is coding required to get into a core VLSI job?
Before I answer the above question, let us understand a few things.
VLSI is broadly divided into 2 categories: frontend and backend VLSI.
Frontend VLSI development cycle involves more of implementing and verifying new functionalities into the chip. This requires a lot of coding. Let us understand why we need coding.
Suppose we are planning for a new chip design to carry out hundreds of tasks. These complex functionalities cannot be executed on the breadboard by taking all components and connecting them.
As circuits are becoming bigger and more complex, coding becomes a must. Coding is done through hardware description languages like VHDL, Verilog and SystemVerilog.
After designing the code it needs to be verified by the verification engineers. This is where verification engineers will identify the bugs and report it to the RTL designers.
Backend VLSI development cycle involves more physical implementation of the code, which RTL designers have developed. Converting the code into gates, adding test logic and physically arranging the components to meet area power and performance.
The aim is to hit the sweet spot between these aspects for a successful chip delivery.. To understand deeper and better. Walk With Us.
