Hiroo Onoda wasn't the only Japanese soldier that failed to notice the war was over. On Guam there was another soldier, Shoichi Yokoi was a soldier on Guam when the Americans invaded and reclaimed the island. Yokoi was a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during the Second World War, and was among the last three Japanese holdouts to be found after the end of hostilities in 1945. He was discovered in the jungles of Guam on 24 January 1972, almost 28 years after U.S. forces had regained control of the island in 1944. I grew up on Guam and was a teenager when he was found. He was living underground in a small bunker. He was discovered when some men were hunting wild deer and spotted him in a village called Inarajan.
