I’m atrocious at making shoes. I’ve only ever made a couple pairs which each had major issues. Also, I have five kids, an untrained puppy, and am starting a new business. So I thought, why not make a pair of extremely intricate, vintage inspired leather boots by hand using advanced tools and techniques I’ve never tried before. What could go wrong?

Join me on this wild adventure through a few months of my life where I dedicated my free time (ha) to creating the most intricate pair of footwear I have ever attempted.

I did the opposite...I got 3 college degrees...and suffered burnout from the job. 3 kids no time for hobbies. Left corporate America to be a school bus driver which gave me time for hobbies...like soap making. Then I had a career ending stroke...for a while I couldn't remember my own name but I remembered how to make soap. Kids are grown now, I'm a grandma x4. So I'm well now and I make soap for fun and to live.

This is amazing to watch, and I so adored the little clips of your family in between! Pretty shoes, Katherine! They'll go for miles!

You sound exactly like me! I had six boys though, now on to grandma daycare. But I’ve always taken on so many projects!

I think the only reason I'm where I am is that I was too pigheaded to quit. My mother was a teacher and a tiger mom. She put me in my first art show when I was four and had my career planned out for me. She also did art, but our tastes were completely different. I wanted to do classical art in a time when everyone was into abstract art. But the pressure to perform was so intense that I ran away from home. I had become a costumer at the age of 14 and should have gone to NY where I could get a job and an education, but went to LA, where I ended up doing bookkeeping because I couldn't type. I had to work two full time jobs, but did art on my lunch hour in the middle of the night. I finally got back into college and got pregnant the week I got into college. My mother said that I would have plenty of time to do studies when the baby slept, but he had other plans. He slept a TOTAL of four hours a day, two after colic and then catnapped the rest of the 22 hours. He didn't sleep through the night until five. So I kept trying to get through college and do art, but was still frustrated by the lack of teachers. I finally got into an art gallery when I was 40, and we went to a girl's show, where I broke down because the school was classical. My mother kept on my back, claiming over and over that if I was just good enough I would get work as an artist, which never happened. My boss paid for me to go to that school which I did for a short time, but we had to move away. I was not able to do art more than a bit here and there until I was 55. It took four years for me to get good enough to get my mother's voice out of my head. I now can draw anything. I work in Italian macchia, red chalk, pastel, oils, and pencil as well as watercolor. But my love is books, and so I illustrate my own books. I'm now 64 and finally have my career going, even though I still have to work full time as a bookkeeper/accountant to support my family. My son grew up into a wonderful boy and now man who is also creative. Hang in there. It's worth it.

You are one gutsy woman! My project at the moment is a whimsical terraced vegetable garden which I made with my son's help using the limbs of two trees we had to fell. It looks whimsical because trees not growing up under a forest canopy have curved branches, so the sides of the paths and beds are curved just like the poles of my tomato trellis.

Wow you're so amazing, I can't believe that I only knew you for your hair regimens at first I was subscribed to you before, but I had broken my phone and I'm happy that I found you again because I really appreciate that for your creativity . You can create your own beautiful vintage clothes, - and especially shoes is amazing. l remember reading this book about a man who made shoes when I was in elementary school, and it was something that I always loved on a soul level and it's hard to explain exactly why. But I've made or added pieces to a crochet top I ordered that didn't have enough material. Unfortunately it shrunk in the dryer and I don't have a sewing machine but if I did I would definitely keep attempting making clothes💖💖💖💖💖

Making your own footwear must be so rewarding! These boots are beautiful ❤️. I imagine every pair of footwear must fit exactly as you like as well. So lucky you have all the gadgets you need at your disposal in order to make them properly.

You are so inspiring ❤️ I just love watching your creativity. My favorite was definitely your story about yourself and watching your adorable children. The little leather book and the batman Helmut were so good 🥹 and I just love that your children create their own things right along with you. Much love from Winnipeg

I have often wondered if "being outnumbered" by kids is the way to stay motivated. When I was single and had all the time, I never soaped or sewed. Now I squeeze it in and even get the kiddos involved.
