This video explains, Why Sun Appears Red during Sunrise and Sunset and also the scattering of light.
We all have observed that the color of the sun appears red during sunrise and sunset. But have you ever wondered why does this happen?
If you don't know the reason, then let me tell you that this happens because of the scattering effect of light.
So first let me tell you, what is the scattering of light, then I will discuss, how is it responsible for the red color of the sun during sunrise and sunset?
What is scattering of light?
Scattering of light is a phenomenon, in which light rays get deviated from its straight path, when they strike to obstacles like dust particles, gas molecules or water vapors etc.
So it is obvious that as the number of particles that obstruct its path increases, the scattering of light rays increases.
Here it is also necessary to understand that all the colors of light scatter differently.
White sun light is a mixture of 7 colors that we see in the rainbow. These seven colors are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
Out of these seven colors, the wavelength of red color is maximum while the wavelength of violet color is minimum.
As the wavelength of the light increases, its scattering decreases. Because of this reason, red color present in the sunlight scatters least while the violet light scatters most.
Now you have the knowledge that is required to understand the mystery, why sun appears red at the time of sunrise and sunset.

As you can see in the image, the sun light has to travel longer distance through the earth's atmosphere at the time of sunrise and sunset as compared to the day time when the sun is just above your head.
Because of this during sunrise and sunset, light rays encounter more atmospheric particles and therefore more scattering takes place.
But as the red light is scattered least in comparison to other colors because of it's largest wavelength, so it reaches in maximum amount into our eyes while large part of other colors is scattered away in the atmosphere before reaching to us.

Then why doesn't it appear red every day? Why only some days because of what's in the sky

It happens because we view it through red iron oxide from a planet that comes through every 3600 years
