Aftermarket parts only should be used for cosmetic purposes or something that won't affect the car actually running and operating properly.

When it comes sensors. They definitely should be OEM

definitely can vouch for this. bought aftermarket spark plug wires, they didnt work. they didnt fit right and i was runnin on only 2 cylinders. i didnt learn my lesson and got aftermarket fuel injectors, same thing. i ended up cleaning my fuel injectors and getting denso plug wires and now my car runs like a top! 1992 toyota celica GT Convertible!

THANKS SCOTTY !
For letting us know about some of these parts to look out for, especially the electrical computer parts.
You right, sometimes cheap ain't the best !

Tail lights on my 2019 Silverado oem were $600 for one. Aftermarket that looked way better were $250 for 2.

Scotty’s right. Many aftermarket parts are just as good as OEM, just as some are not. If you have found and stayed loyal to a mechanic who therefore cares about you and your money (because you support him) he is a lot more likely to guide you on parts choices.
Meanwhile, don’t denigrate aftermarket manufacturers. Imagine for a moment what the dealers would get if the aftermarket manufacturers weren’t price affecting at least the most commonly requested parts.

Recently got a starter for my Accord from NAPA auto parts. Lifetime warranty and about $400 less than what Honda wanted. Both remans.

2003 VW Polo 9N 3 door hatchback 1.4 tailgate struts. Genuine ones are $94 a pair here. I bought a complete jack tool kit for my Mercedes A180, 2015 model, $150 AU. That jack weighs a lot on it's own. That kit is the genuine one from Mercedes.

Depends what you want. Do you just want to do the cheap/chincy way and buy an aftermarket tail/headlight to make your car look a little better? Or do you respect your car (And its manufacturers quality) enough to replace a worn out headlight/taillight with an OEM replacement? Obviously there IS a difference. Even if you dont notice it standing 10 feet away. And I'd rather spend the extra $50-100 to get the quality OEM replacement on a part like that.
Do you need an OEM air filter? No. Or OEM wiper blades? No. Or OEM battery? No. But, I think lights is one thing to not cheap out on. Respect your car.

I bought a GMB remanufactured water pump for my 3.7 V6 Chrysler engine. The darn thing actually flew apart. Got it from RockAuto. So I ended up buying all Mopar under the hood for my truck. Water pump, tensioner, fan, belt, do it right and do it once

the dealer headlight housings for my friends Chrysler cost $1200 dollars BUT they no longer stock them so I told him of and after market company that sold them for $157 dollars ! they were exact fit and were made exactly like the old ones .. every mold make and codes were the same

Don't buy aftermarket for anything that's critical to car function basically

This is what the junkyard is for. You get OEM quality at aftermarket prices. It is some work searching and pulling the parts out yourself but it is better than coughing up your whole wallet at the dealer 👍

That was an issue back in the 1970s when I had my VW beetle.

I’ve had junk yards screw me over with prices because I had an after market catalytic converter

Not all aftermarket parts are bad. Had to replace head gasket and my mechanic used an aftermarket part and it lasted twice as long. He said the OEM head gaskets were crap for that particular engine.

I bought ignition coils from eBay for a 12 years old Ford Focus when one of the original unit started to play up
