when that bit snapped I felt for you. Used to use old CD's for that mirror trick, taught my kids how to drill straight with them. Careful smelling oak of the mirror is a gateway to harder things.... like walnut

This is the best programme on YouTube! Your skill and precision is unsurpassed. The explanation and narration are brilliant and the filming superb. My wife and I really enjoy your projects, you are truly amazing!

Thank you Carl for showing all the missteps/challenges that are coming up during your builds. It’s exciting to watch as you think them through, research and come up with solutions - that mirror trick is brilliant!! Often we learn more from the setbacks, and most Tubers choose only to show a flawless build.
Cheers and all the best to you and your family for 2024 and beyond

That mirror trick is a really good tip. Sorry but I did laughter when the bit fell out and broke the mirror. Your face, priceless . Looking forward to your progress on this project. Happy new year to you and yours

I am 65 years old and I grew up on a farm on the Pevemsy Marshes. My father was a dairy and sheep farmer and many lambing seasons were spent in our Shepard Hut on the marshes. We had straw made up as two beds and a pot burner in the corner for heat, which was needed on the marshes as it was bloody cold in those winds.

Watching you work with health issues and material issues, I had to write to say how impressed i am with your achievements on this project. Your ability to problem solve and always move forward despite challenges is admirable. I recently received my blue jacket and have already received a handful of positive comments on it :) Be well and I look forward to more progress.

I’m a carpenter by trade, but it’s so relaxing watching and listening to you work, after working all day with lumber 😂

Hey Carl its reassuring to me that even people with your incredible skills have "I can't believe that just happened" moments. And you manage to do it with no cussing - that is what is amazing. Cheers mate!

Watching you graft your way around wood makes me appreciate not only the physical stress but the mental stress of minor failures, (Or even major ones!) mathematical challenges and problem solving not encountered every day in other professions! Thank you for a fascinating glimpse of what you do!

That mishap at 21 mins...my heart sank and I laughed with great sympathy. Love your work and tenacity Carl.
I viewed this on the same day something stupid happened to me when I was wood working in the shed...and I proper sent out the expletives at great volume!

On most hand chuck drills you can tighten as far as you can then turn back the reverse way (ever so slightly) until you hear a click and it will lock the chuck in place so bits won’t slip. I recently came across this tip and it has helped in a big way.

Always the realest and most enjoyable carpentry videos out there! Thank you for your candid and humorous approach, everyone has hiccups in their projects but people don't always show them.

absolute nail biter. When the bit broke the mirror, I thought in Spanish "le llueve sobre mojado", which more or less translates to "when it rains, it pours". Congrats for keeping your calm in front of the camera!

Happy New Year, Carl. Two things: I watched an old-school Japanese carpenter (via YouTube of course) auger a similar sized hole in a similar sized beam. He used a block of wood with a "V" notched in it to guide the bit. A couple of others have suggested two boards at right angles, but the block makes more sense to me--stable and you can clamp it. Second thing, the only price I found for green oak timbers in the US is $12.75/linear foot for 6x6, which would make your beams about $260 US, about EU 235, but not FOH and not including shipping. No white oak for timbers in the western US.
