The Real Reasons Why Japanese Slurp Noodles #Shorts

No, it’s not rude at all; you are free to eat your noodles without slurping them if you’d like.

Someone started to spread this “myth” because in a tea ceremony the guests will slurp the last sip of matcha to tell the host
that they are done drinking and to express their appreciation without speaking. However, slurping noodles has nothing to do with this rule in the tea ceremony, and it’s not meant for expressing your appreciation to the chef.

The two real reasons for slurping noodles are…

1. To enjoy the flavor
2. To eat it quickly

By slurping noodles, air will be taken into your mouth together with noodles, which enhances the flavor of noodles inside your mouth.

From the moment noodles are boiled, they start to lose their elasticity and become soggy. By slurping noodles, you are able to eat them quicker in order to enjoy them at their best texture.

“Making the noodles taste better” are the only reasons for slurping, so if you can’t or don’t want to, that’s completely fine.

Honestly I respect this man. He's spreading what I assume is his culture for free. Just shows humanity isn't THAT bad.

You slurp noodles because a big part of flavor is aroma, when you slurp you take in a lot more of the aroma along with the food and it will actually taste better

According to the chef Teiichi Sakurai, ramen is supposed to take no longer than five minutes to eat, so slurping ramen is definitely more practical than attempting to eat it in complete silence.

I think some of these myths spread in the US from soldiers stationed at US military bases in Japan. They made broad assumptions about Japanese people from their particular perspective.

Honestly, I don't even know how can you eat ramen without slurping. It's just natural to me because it's in a broth. Unlike dry noodles like chao mien or spaghetti.

Having been raised with Japanese family, although I've been told these two reasons. I've also been told it's a sign of respect towards the chef which cooked it.

When I make and eat Instant ramen, I definitely slurp, not so much because it gets more flavorful, though it does, but to cool them down faster, and to get more into my mouth, so I can do what I need or want to, faster.

This is similar to wine tasting. To get more flavour out of wine, you first swirl your glass to incorporate air and then drink it while gently slurping also to incorporate more air. This is because air is the medium to carry aroma to our noses, not liquid. And aroma plays an important role in enhancing our appetite along side with taste.

Thank you for this information! As someone who sometimes gets food stuck in my esophagus when I eat to fast, so no slurping for me! now I know I will not be seen as rude in Japan! If I get the chance to go !

I've always avoided that issue by drinking the whole bowl in one go

The only thing I can think of why slurping is rude is that slurping makes noises and might bother someone

Oh thank god, I literally can’t slurp noodles no matter how hard I try. This is such a relief
