I was Steve's tour manager during this period. I knew they'd filmed that day but the video never came to light until today. This was not 1982. It was 1983. In `82, Steve still had Jim Leverton on bass and Goldy McJohn on keyboards with Fallon Williams III on drums. We brought in Tommy Johnson on guitar and Keith Christopher on bass in early 83. Keith now plays for Lynyrd Skynyrd. The bill included three local groups plus Derek St. Holmes of Ted Nugent fame and Mountain. Humble Pie was headlining. Leslie West claimed technical problems and was trying to delay so he could headline. Steve Marriott didn't care and went on. This kind of backfired on Leslie West as probably half the crowd left after Humble Pie. I'm editing this after seeing the entire video. Pretty sad to hear some of the comments Steve makes here regarding his drummer and the late Muddy Waters. Steve often made questionable remarks on stage but this night was probably the worst fueled a bit by alcohol. I remember Steve making some of these comments but actually seeing and hearing him doing it was pretty shocking.

This is a great rock band. The black custom and gold top are perfect together. And those are some damn good songs. What a talent Steve was. This is rock and roll still alive in the early 80s.

Arguably the best British Front Man ever.

He was an absolute tornado. No offence to the likes of Robert Plant, Paul Rogers and all those other great British bluesy vocalists that emerged from the 60’s, but Marriott blew them all out of the water. What a fantastic soulful guitarist too.

Most singers would lose their voice after a couple songs if they had to sing as intense as Steve! He made it look so effortlessly, all while playing guitar like a true genius!

Though I realize this was beneficial for marketing purposes, this was NOT Humble Pie. It was Steve Marriot and his backing band. They played a combination of Humble Pie, Small Faces, Covers and even solo work. He STILL had one of the GREATEST voices in music and his guitar work was pure perfection. This man doesnt get enough recognition! So sad he died so tragically and young.

Despite his crudités, Steve was a hot performing firework, particularly with this rockin' band. If he gave up acting to be on R&B FIRE, this is good example. Pity the musicians who had to try to follow this no nonsense, no pretentious show. Steve and the band gave it the biz ! RIP, Steve 🙏🏽

Thanks for the post. I'm grateful to have seen HP, on their Smokin' tour in 1972, Chicago. It's kind of sad to watch this video, and the ravages of alcoholism.

Some great comments here about Steve M, and personal comments excellent. He used my old Sunburst Telecaster (with 3 extra holes i drilled in the headstock) on Ogdens, gave me his pink Les Paul for it. In 1978 i was the sound engineer on the Small Faces Reunion tour (UKand Europe). Fortunately this was still his 'Happy period', but i still had to get him out of trouble in can't tell the story here but it was outrageous good fun.👍🇬🇧

Some people are unaware that Marriott was the first choice for Led Zepellin, Jagger did not want him near the Stones. The band did, and he was also the first choice for the Artful Dodger in Oliver. There is a good video on YouTube explaining why he was not huge in the States, type Gotti and Steve Marriot and it may surface. I saw him with Humble Pie, their debut I think, at Charlton. supporting the Who, for me, he blew them away. Thank you for loading this. It is intriguing to watch Americans reacting to 'Black coffee' on the Old Grey Whistle Test. They love it and ask, 'Where is this guy?' I hope this is of interest to you.
