Gregory isn't "evil." The books make it VERY clear that he was being controlled by Glitchtrap/Mimic1 during GGY, and somehow got freed between then and Security Breach, which is why his goals are so different.

Or, and hear me out here, he broke out of Glitchtrap's control when the guy in the messages who wanted to save the princess beat BB's air adventure. As for the lift, there's a VERY strong likelihood that it was the mimic. The battery for the lift is right next to the mimic, and we hear static prior to Gregory saying he'll betray her.

What is it with you guys and saying Gregory is evil?

I think that the last part of Gregory talking to Cassie was, taken over by the mimic because in the middle of their conversation you could hear a buzzing like something blocking Gregory talking to Cassie.
