Don't waste a ball lid if the original has a button. The original will reseal if heated in warm water. I reuse them all the time.

Brilliant. One of my buying strategies with spaghetti sauce is to get the jar that already has the MASON label on it. The regular lids and rings fit perfectly. Thanks for the tip with jars that don't quite fit the rings.

Classico spaghetti sauce comes in actual mason jars. You can use regular canning lids on them.

Thanks for the tip. And guess what? I didn’t have any tops and decided to try canning with the original tops and made some pineapple jam (water bath) and the all sealed. All 5 of them. I did make sure to reuse store bought jam jars.

You sir have just saved me a bomb, I was about to spend £80 on some Mason jars and just thought I’d check YouTube, thank you much for sharing your knowledge!! 😀

I had to chuckle when you talked about paying a buck a jar. Wow, in New Zealand we pay at least $8.00 ($5.00 US) per mason jar, and seals and rings on top of that! Charity shops are where I look for them, usually $2.00 ($1.25 US) per jar second hand. Wow.

In the UK 6 pint size Ball jars cost £16 and they’re empty, I’ll be going to the supermarket for my jars from now on 😉

Using mason jar lids on repurposed jars as you demoed is a great tip. They will also vacuum seal using a Food Saver type attachment or oxygen absorbers for storing dry goods long term. - New Subscriber

Many thanks! I was looking for canning jars. My mom gave me a box of jars like these in your video. I took them home but secretly rolled my eyes. Now I see she must’ve known something I didn’t!

I can't find Canning jars right now. However do have grocery food jars that were about to go into the recycle bin. Not anymore! It's time to make preserves! Thank you!

To easily release the vacuum and open almost any jar without damaging the lid or jar, I recommend a Heinz 57 Baby food jar opener. If you don't have one of those, try a flat bladed screwdriver. Insert under a tab and turn "like a key". STOP when you hear the vacuum releasing. The lid should be finger tight now. An offset or ratcheting screwdriver works better if your grip is getting weaker.

One caution: removing all outer paper labels is a MUST for safe pressure canning (imagine a paper-wad clogging all the safety vents)! Consider using this method for water-bath canning until you're sure no loose labels can clog PC vents.

The difference is whether or not the jar lid is a CT or Lug, it depends on the glass jar closure ring guides. The CT mason jar flat lid will fit inside the Lug, but the Lug won't fit in the CT. Found this out doing research on reusing grocery store jars for canning. Thank you for the video!

There’s a lady who uses the original pop top by itself to seal the jar without the mason jar lid. In case you’re out of lids.

Thank you! FYI, the Pioneer Woman has excellent marinara sauce and her jars are really nice and have measurements in the glass.

Soaking over night in hot water will usually make the labels slide right off. The glue is another story tho.
