For me, it’s people with nonmedical backgrounds telling medical professionals what’s best medically.

I have heart failure and 2 of my doctors have left the practice. I hope that this can be fixed. Doctors and nurses save lives and I’m saddened by what’s been happening to them.

I left - and became a data scientist and work in public health using data - was totally burnt - and the admin part is garbage and the environment toxic

wow, I thought this was going to be a video about Dr. Webb leaving, phew haha. but yea, I was originally a premedical student and I realized overall opportunity cost just seems to be driving more and more people out of medicine. In undergrad, most students realize this and aren't so passionate about the career anymore but are left with a stem degree and potentially debt, in which case they feel stuck and lost. I can only imagine being in a similar conundrum once already in medical school, residency, or once you've completed the training process - you have all this debt and years spent in training, yet it seems many aspects of being a physician/healthcare provider these days are bleak.

I haven’t been on this channel in a while … I actually expanded a new business I started during premed . I made enough in my business to cover premed and medical school.. Financially I’m not worried but BURNOUT IS REAL… On another note, great video ! Very insightful 🙂

Let me just say that I LOVE doctor Webb. I actually watch his videos more than I watch yours. That being said I find the irony so interesting that you're covering one of his videos now where he speaks about Burn Out. When a few years ago, he covered your video when you spoke about leaving medicine. And he was saying he can't see why someone would put in so much time and work to become a surgeon and then leave. Yet now, if you watch his videos, you can tell that because the money isn't there in medicine as he was always taught he is struggling to pay for overhead and other things ( I'm actually here because I was looking for another video he did on burn out) but I think he took it down where he spoke about how he was burnt out and stressed. You could just see it in his face and, his demeanor on that video that he was sad and struggling because his overhead is $50, 000 a month ($600, 000 a year) and he is re-paying $500, 000 school loans, plus he has a family so living expenses but, the average Orthopedic surgeon only makes about $400, 000 a year. So, unlike what everyone is taught the large amount of money isn't always there in medicine; especially when you're just starting your practice. Then there is your video when you spoke about quitting. And how you are actually making more money than you would have if you'd stayed a surgeon.

Anyway, watching his videos through the years and how he subtly speaks abou the money not being there (though he always say it's because of Covid) and how he is taking on extra surgeries just to pay bills made me pause. I am looking more into what it really is like to be a surgeon instead of just jumping into it. I have always wanted to be a doctor but at the same time I don't want to take on a career where my annual debt is more than my annual income.

All of those a plenty good reasons to quit medicine, and, in my opinion, also good enough reasons to even be discouraged to not enter the field, or stop putting forth all that effort into getting into medical school if in the end you’re going to be dealing with all these issues like burnout, lack of independence, high cost of practice with lower reimbursements, etc. On top of that, the ridiculously exorbitant cost of a medical education in the US is enough reason to pursue something else.

On year #10 of chronic illness, over $150k out of pocket, 13 specialists later and no true diagnosis, no doctor listens. So seeking a new doctor hasnt helped.

The current trend of decreasing reimbursements and increasing overhead/cost is not sustainable for most private practices. How can any business make it on less cashflow and more outflow. Many of my co-workers, myself included, firmly believe that this is how the government is trying to nationalize healthcare through the back door. If you basically force providers to go to work for hospital or corporate owned practices, then you can control healthcare because the government already pretty much controls hospitals and big companies through how they manipulate payments from insurance and Medicare. Once the majority of medical practices are under these large umbrellas then "voila", you have nationalized healthcare without calling it that, all without having to vote it through or making it "official".

how did u manage to stay consistent till u made it as a doctor? did you manage all the loans by yourself or u did u have some help? because its quite impressive to see you as a full fledged doctor with successful side hustles as well

I think reinbursment vs training required. I mean, it's crazy, we already have like sometimes 7/8 years before starting residency, and then 6/7 years of specialized training, whereas a Sci Comp major only does what? 4 years of training and then they join the workforce way earlier making bank, someitmes on par with what a specialized MD does. I think training should be drastically shortened, specially for PCP

What I find wildly gross is how little the actual doctors are paid vs. the hospital. You have a $38k procedure that is billed by the hospital and the surgeon may only get a $2-3k and that is billed separately from the $38k. As a patient, I feel if we are going to have such high costs, I want my surgeon to be equitably compensated since he/she is the person actually saving my life. Note the hospital bill doesn't include the anesthesiologist, radiologist or even the assisting physician's fee. I can totally see why doctors are quitting. I never thought the day would come when I'd say doctors are being underpaid. As a patient that pisses me off.

Corporate greed. Doctors go through the most education and training and should be well compensated for it. It’s truly unfair.

I love your videos so much, I've been studying neurology/neurosurgery since I was 12. You've kept me going this whole time, and I hope the best for you!

I think it’s better for them to quit then treats their patients like crap. Because they are having a bad day. Many people lost their lives from doctors, giving the wrong prescriptions like millions of people. So yes, please if you’re not comfortable with your job. Go
