In a recent visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium's King Phillipe admitted that his country's rule over the Congo was "unjustifiable & racist", but the king stopped short of offering an apology.

Belgium’s colonial reign over the Congo was characterized by economic exploitation, torture and millions of deaths; in what some historians have termed as the worst genocide in history.

The Belgian-backed murder of Congolese independence hero, Patrice Lumumba, exacerbated colonial atrocities. Brussels is now coming to terms with its dark past in the DRC- which still reels from decades of misrule.
