My MIL would send letters to my husband and write “For my son’s eyes only”. He’d hand them to me to read first. Sadly, her unwillingness to quit that kind of behavior created a wall between her and her son.
A parent should never ask her child to keep a secret from their spouse and especially one that involves THEIR money. She’s put her son in a bad spot due to her own foolishness. She’s known the date the lease would end for years. It’s like people who complain they’re broke because they had to pay their car registration. Um… it comes around every year and shouldn’t be a surprise.

You also should have sent him a book on relationships. He has an inappropriate relationship with his mom and he needs to redefine it.

So his parents have a separate account... and she's already borrowed 10K from her husband and now wants to borrow money from her son... sounds like the husband is trying to keep his wifes spending under control by giving her an account with money she can spend and she still cant control herself. She probably already borrowed money from her sons wife, that's why she wanted to swear him to secrecy. This lady is probably out of control and asking for money all over the place and not small amounts either.

No way I could keep a loan to a family member a secret from my wife. Not that I'd loan family money in the first place. If it's a dire need, I'd just gift it to them.

that's an evil toxic relationship. that his mom would even say this out loud! he needs to start pushing back. this is the voice of experience here. my own "mother" knew no limits until i cut her completely off. it's been a troubling subject with her older sister, who i adore, btw. my aunt ruthie is a saint. i love her to pieces❣️

Mom is manipulative and a liar. He should just absolutely shut her down - don't give her a red cent. This family sounds like a mess and I feel bad for the wife of this guy. Her mother-in-law is trying to manipulate her husband behind her back and doesn't respect her.
