Paying in cash is not illegal. That like saying getting paid by check or direct deposit is illegal.

For example I could deposit money directly into your bank account without withholding taxes or having you sign a 1099.

And completely opposite, I could withhold taxes, pay you in cash, and write you stub. Now doing this would inconvenience the both of us but I would be completely legal.


It is the refusal to pay taxes that is illegal.

Is not "you should never accept cash", is you should never accept money without being in your payroll docs. If you get a payroll, sign you receive that amount, and that amount is told to social security... Where's the problem? Same would be if they paid in bank and not declare it (although is much probable they'll get detected easier)

Just quit and work somewhere else. Depends on the situation which is better. Definitely not for long term jobs, but it has its benefits.

Guy I worked withs father got paid in cash. (his brother was his employer) 30 years of work later and he finds out it was all under the table. (if was the only job he ever had, so he didn't know about taxes)
He died having to live off his kids.
