Divide Fractions & Mixed Numbers w/ Cross Cancelling Terms (Simplify Fractions) - [7-2-14]

In this lesson, you will learn how to divide fractions and mixed numbers. In order to divide fractions, we must first change the division into multiplication, then multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Because of this, all fraction division becomes a multiplication problem. If a mixed number is present, just convert the mixed number into an improper fraction before proceeding. Always simplify the result and use cross cancellation to make the problem simpler prior to carrying out the multiplication step.

So can I not cross cancel before I flip the fraction? say if I had two fractions divided like (2/13) / (1/2)? Could I not cancel both 2's out before I flip the fraction and multiply?

Rarely do I see the division of fractions explained as, simply, numerator divided by numerator, denominator divided by denominator (when such straightforward division is manageable) 1/4 divided by 1/2 = 1/1 over 4/2 = 1/2. "Keep/Change/Flip" as a procedure is most helpful. Sometimes, though, it's an unnecessary extra step

Graphical interpretation easy when dividing a larger fraction by a smaller one. I think it's somewhat involved when dividing a smaller fraction by a larger one.
