You got to admit, despite this being a Legends comic, this was a great duel! Maul is one of the few duelists in the history of Star Wars to give Darth Vader a good fight or overcome him. By this time, Vader had become a better lightsaber duelist than he was as Anakin. He had mastered all 7 lightsaber forms and combined elements of each form into his own personalized variant of Djem So. While Vader was capable of holding his own against Maul, Maul was able to get the best of him and bypass Vader’s defenses. Once Vader bisected Maul’s saberstaff, Maul truly outclassed the Dark lord. None of the dual bladed practitioners that Vader had faced in the past, such as Ventress and Starkilker/Subject 1138, were as intense or unorthodox as Maul, who learned Jar’Kai directly from Sidious, who had mastered all 7 lightsaber forms from Plagueis. In this duel, Maul proved to be the superior swordsman and superior martial artist to Vader, who only managed to defeat him by impaling both of them with his own lightsaber. No disrespect to Vader. His fighting style made him a nigh unstoppable in combat. It’s just that there were some duelists, such as Maul, Galen Marek, Starkiller and Luke Skywalker, who could see the flaws in his combat style and overcome them.
