Astroneeer is a game that seemed to have a TON of potential and be one of new best survival games. Unfortunatley the game fell short in many ways and today in 2022 the game lacks everything we wish it could have had. Sad story... today we'll be talking about it.

Did you guys think Astroneer was actually fun?

I completely disagree with this video. The game is very fun, and does have some re-playability. I have about 8 worlds on the game. But it is true, the game is meant for exploration and there is nothing on the planets. No structures, people or anything. I do really love this game though

I'm glad to see the community defending this beautiful game.

It truly is a relaxing experience with huge charisma and gorgeous sights. It's not for everybody.

Wow, it's almost as if sandbox games are supposed to be about creativity instead of an end goal

i have almost 50 hours in the game and enjoyed every single one of those hours, i think the game just targeted at a specific audience and you just happened to not be one of those people

I have 700 hours in Astroneer, here’s my take: First of all, Astroneer may have exploration elements, but it’s not an exploration game. It has survival elements but it’s not a survival game. Astroneer is primarily a resource gathering base building game, it’s built on a solid gameplay loop based on grinding for resources to build more items to allow you to get more resources. Survival elements such as oxygen management and plant life, and exploration elements such as the different planets are more the icing on the cake. But saying that these elements used to be better is false. I mean yeah the plant life was more dangerous, with death pits and tumble weed and cave lures, I actually miss that, but storms? Storms were fun the first 2 times but then became crap, as the mechanic boiled down to: storm comes every 20 minutes, dig a hole, stay in hole for 4 minutes until storm passes…. That’s it. They also blew loss vehicles and resources around, but all that mechanic boiled down to was either using storage to clean up your crap or building a wall of terrain. There is a decent amount of storm nostalgia in the Astroneer community but it’s mostly rose tinted glasses stuff, as the actual mechanic was super shallow and lost all actual threat once you realised you just had to dig a hole.

The exploration elements are again less of the focus of game. The new locations make for cool places to race around scavenging for resources in a buggy or on a hoverboard, and nice base building locations, and a nice switch up from the norm. They’re fun and pretty, but this game isn’t Outer Wilds or Sable (which are 2 of my favourite purely exploration focused games), this is a game primarily focused on resource gathering and base building. I personally would love if future elements fleshed out this aspect more with new biomes and such, but it’s hardly a game breaking flaw with the game. In defence of Astroneer though, the game does actually have a few cool areas, such as the chaotic terrain mountains on Atrox, of the cool mushroom cave biome on Sylva, or the icy cave biome on Glacio. Hopefully these explorations elements are dived into a little more in future, but by watching devs streams and such it looks like lore through log entries and stuff (kinda like subnautica) may be a focus instead.

Also little side note to say the game is still getting updates, and cosmetics are merely a way to fund those updates. An update adding snails is coming within a week which will also be the date of the switch release. Because of the work on switch and snails content has been slow over the past 5 months, but there is supposed to be a lot more content on the way. While the cosmetics are ridiculously overpriced I will agree, they exist because the devs stated they didn’t want to split the fanbase with paid dlc for updates, this way everyone gets the same content.

You made a note about the tutorial being removed and I think your disagreement over that comes from a miss understanding of modern Astroneer. In 2021 an update was released containing a number of things such as new power items, an updated compass for navigation, but most importantly missions. Missions essentially guide any new players through the game by providing small tasks that tell you what to do next and reward your actions. They were added because new players seemed to be getting stuck in some way or another due to a missunderstanding of the progression loop. This makes the tutorial irrelevant. The old tutorial was also quite outdated, it showed for instance that the resource laterite was found above ground when it is actually found in caves in the game, and it didn’t dive into many other elements of the game such as navigation, vehicles, the mid game processing items like the chem lab or atmosphere condenser…. the tutorial was crap.

So I’ve been ranting for ages, what’s my point. If Astroneer isn’t about survival or exploration, why would you play a boring game about pretty much just pure grind, where you just collect resources and base build on pretty planets, on foot and in vehicles, while managing power and survival elements like oxygen on the side? Where’s the fun in a game about decorated grind? And I think that’s where Treyllo just doesn’t fit into the target audience for this kinda game. A whole lot of people, myself included, love a nice solid gameplay loop focused around resource collection, especially if you’re playing with friends (which I’ve done for about 100 hours of my 700), where you can muck around and build a race track if you get bored, or blow a big hole in the ground. When you’ve finished building your base you could make an automated factory to mass produce items, like fireworks and make a fabulous colourful display, or actually pursue the ‘story’, the stuff with the alien structures. The alien structures aren’t the point of the game, although they take you to the ending, that’s like saying beating the ender dragon is the point of Minecraft, and they’re rather repetitive, but that’s fine if you ask me. The game repetitive, and that is why I, and many others I know, enjoy it so much.

I don’t Treyllo really gets it, or maybe the game really is trash and my weird brain is in the minority.

So if exploration

Man, I’ve never seen someone so wrong about any game ever, not even a game journalist has been this incorrect and unaware.

It's a casual survival game, it's my favorite survival game along with ark. I love the colors, how casual it is, and the overall game. They are adding some life as we go, the snails are a start. Their expanding to switch which I can't wait for! Imo, it's absolutely amazing

I cant stress this enough astroneer has 29 employees working on it. Their jobs are split between designing new structures, texturing, modeling, making shaders, animating, sound design, balancing, implementing them to fit logically into the game progression, debugging, etc. Their team is probably 2 or 3 people designing new things, 2 or 3 texturing, animating, and shading, 2 or 3 for marketing, 2 or 3 for coding the things into the actual game, 2 or 3 working on fixing existing bugs, 2 or 3 working on fixing new bugs, 1 or 2 on sound design, and then anyone left can help out the others when they can. Small teams are very stressed and work as best as they can. Imagine working on a new structure for 3 weeks only to have a meeting where that structure needs to be reworked or removed. Maybe they removed the storm because the storm had major bugs when you built a base with 50 or more structures. Or they thought it had no place in the game since it's not really a challenge. The storm literally is unpreventable, random, and just remove structures you already built just to build them again. Please be mindful of the small team who btw is very transparent about future updates and additions to the game. The cosmetics are literally there only to make money for more updates because funny enough the 29 people at this small company with only one game needs to pay its employees a working salary. Trust me I agree the microtransactions are kinda disappointing but that's the easiest way to make more content, faster, and monetize it. Please give the game another shot when more content is released because it will be released further down the line.

the headass takes are unreal. people have already dissected your takes pretty well but I'd like to add my own to the mix. you just seem to miss the point of the game and rag on everything that isn't there because you're looking for something else.

want to explore and discover? go play an open world game with a meticulously created map with POIs to find and loot to make you feel special. you want survival? go find one of the million survival games that base their gameplay loop around filling a hunger bar or whatever. you want replayability? you should probably not completely gloss over the mechanics that make a game unique and fleshed out, then cry when you don't think the game is equivalent to Minecraft with two thousand mods in complexity.

astroneer gives the player so many creative tools to build cool stuff and be proud of what they have achieved. every time this game has updated it has been bigger and better than before. and I've never once regretted buying it or spending my time enjoying it.

you don't agree? awesome, don't play. but I can't see the merit embarrassing yourself with a video like this. yikes.

My guy... this game is excellent you just have no imagination left. There is so much to do and explore. Even making the game harder for yourself like no renewable resources challenge or stranding yourself of other planets and trying to return home. Setting up fully automated systems. This game is a blast you are nuts.

A few points - the tutorial was super confusing when I played it, the screen shots are better and I do agree with the point about threats and stuff. The only threat is a plant that is very weak. Maybe they could add some natural disasters or even more plants. Also they need to add buildings or something like that. It would make the game way more fun to explore

I've been playing this game since it began early access and I full heartedly disagree with the devs being moneygrubbing because of how far the game has come and changed. If you were there from the beginning you wouldn't take a lot of the current content for granted.

This is quite honestly the worst take I’ve even seen on a game, it’s not about survival or exploration, it’s a sandbox/base building game. If you really think that after 5-6 hours the game gets bad it’s because you have no imagination. And the whole “there’s nothing to explore” thing is just a lie, the different plants have different things to explore, like on desolo and novus theres the different chess pieces you can collect, or on desolo you can find the Apollo lander. Or on any of the planets you get collect different marbles. Just because you haven’t tried to have fun doesn’t mean you can’t. Also just because you don’t have any imagination and you literally don’t know what the game is about doesn’t make it a bad game.

The game isn't ALL about exploring; the other half (or more i would argue) of the value comes from setting your own creative goals and seeing them through. You have the ability to terraform for a reason!
