This is so counter-productive... I personally will never order these machines for myself. I do however know personally a person who would absolutely go for the repair kit, and he's excited right now that apple is doing this. He is obsessed with keeping his devices pristine but does not trust apple techs to do the repairs, he himself is a technician.

_Oh how terrible of Apple to give you the tools they use..._

These kits are something Apple is likely making "available" do to the "Right to Repair" movements going on. I would think the restrictions on their website for even being able to rent or buy has to do with Apple having been an EXTREMELY proprietary company since its' founding. They even go so far as to have some parts custom made with, for example, a couple of moved signals or customized pin spacing, and have the manufacturer sign an exclusive agreement with Apple to prevent parts from being available to use for repairs. Apple is and has always been horrible to anyone trying to repair their stuff. The idea of them trying to scare people away from replacing a battery in a phone just sounds like business as usual for Apple.

The Verge article has its bias of course, but it mostly comes down to Apple "complying" with the Right to repair law, which is moronic of Apple to ship you all their tools and have YOU repair it yourself. There's no way I'll have the skill or knowledge to fix my own phone and then having to rent a kit. Basically Apple just wants to deter people from doing this and leave it to them.

Apple is a Luxury brand IMO, like Lexus or Infiniti. Everything is way more expensive to repair on an Infiniti and Lexus than on a Nissan and Honda. It's just part of buying a Luxury brand. (That's why I have an Android, lol)
