LESSON SUMMARY:

MULTI-STAGE FITNESS TEST ESSENTIALS
It’s purpose is to assess a performers Aerobic Endurance and VO2 Max.

Pre-test, a performer must warm up and stretch dynamically. The assessor can use this time to set up the test in a safe and appropriate area.

Two ends are marked out using cones or lines at a distance of 20m apart.

A sound system must be set up near by with the correct soundtrack.

Bleeps are grouped into stages, each stage gets progressively quicker.

The perform makes their way across the 20m area in time with the bleeps. As the frequency of bleeps increases, so too should their speed. This places rising demands on the performer, until eventually they become too fatigued to keep up with the bleeps.

The assessor notes down the level and stage the performer achieved and then compares this to the normative data table to ascertain if their VO2 Max is above, at or below average for their age and gender.

POSITIVES
The 20m area and sound system are easy to set up.

Multiple performers can be tested at the same time.

Maximal testing avoids the need to predict. Instead the level a performer makes it too directly correlates to their maximum capability.

NEGATIVES
Specialist equipment, the sound track needs to be correct.

Maximal intensity is subjective to the performer, therefore they could drop out before reaching their physiological potential.

Time consuming

Surface, weather, time of day, nutrition are all variables that could impact on the reliability of the data recorded.
