You are so awesome for crediting your Uber driver for the idea. Thanks and that’s why I watch your channel, you gather info from all your sources and that helps us all ❤

I've cared for 2 family members with dementia.
Trying to reason with them, correct them, etc. I found to only make them more confused and aggravated.
So, I decided to live on their planet.
Just be agreeable and go along with their stories.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad advice, but it made things easier for both of us.

I agree smell is very important as well as hearing, like music of their era.

Smells are very evocative. Music is also extremely effective in caring with people with dementia. I've seen people who a non-verbal sing along with songs they know.

Never thought of smell as calming but can see its worthiness. My son in law is a farmer and he has a you tube channel which shows all aspects of farming from grain to cows. My mom responds so well to the videos because she grew up on a grain farm. Especially combining ones.

Definitely worth exploring further. Makes sense to me.

I've found my husband is calmer when listening to older folk music. Things he listened to in his youth.

Absolutely! It's not any different than a song that triggers a memory.

Absolutely, l also believe a favorite song or music has the same calming effect.

Yes, that is a great idea! Sights and sounds like music they have enjoyed also bring calmness.

Of course! Great to try anything that may be helpful. I just went through this with my dad for an entire year before he passed this last January 20th. I found little ways to get through things with him . This channel popped on my feed for some unknown reason a couple of weeks ago. Oddly I find it comforting but also very sad. I’m glad to see these posts and stories etc. It provides some sense of validation and camaraderie. Even though my dad is gone. Hardest thing I’ve ever been through had been his passing, and I am so grateful for his last year of life . The time we had together. Thank you

Great idea. They also say a few hours of essential oils (in a diffuser) at night can boost memory in those with dementia. Sounds like it could be a win-win for some.

Smell is the most evocative of senses. It can literally transport you back in time, accessing happy memories

Certain smells take me right back to being a child at a time I felt safe, warm and happy. The feeling I get when this happens its complete contentment and calmness. So if that same feeling can happen for a person struggling with confusion and being upset, I think its worth it.

That is a good one, and kudos to him for figuring it out. I had a patient that liked the television show Upstairs Downstairs and would become agitated when the aides put on regular tv.

I inexplicably fell for a man to whom I was not physically attracted. I later discovered that he wore my late partners after shave. I had not consciously realised that but saw a bottle in his bathroom 😢. My brain in the deepest level wasn’t with this man at all

I have used Mother’s favorite perfume on her from time to time. I should do it more. It does help.

Smells can be a trigger for me. It can bring good memories and sometimes not so good. So yes, smells can have an effect on a person.
