How to define start and stop points in your YouTube videos

IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS METHOD, LOOK TO THE FIRST COMMENT. This is still working for me in Chrome, but others seem to be having problems.

When creating content for your audience, video is by far the most captivating. If you have a WordPress site, all you need to do is plug in the embed code and voila - people can view the video on your website.

But sometimes we only want to share the important parts or the highlights. Today, I'm going to show you how it's done.

Start and stop videos at specific points

Last week, I showed you how to define a starting point for videos you share. We are going to take that one level higher and define a stopping point as well.

Sharing and embedding are two different things, and so the steps to do them are slightly different.

Sharing YouTube videos

Head over to YouTube and find the video you want to share. Let's take this video as an example.

Find the part you want to highlight - where you want the video to start and stop. Convert those values into seconds.
Example: You want to highlight 01:30-02:10 of the video. In seconds that would be 90-130.

Edit the URL so it transforms from this

Delete '?watch'
Replace the '=' with '/'
Add '?start=x' and '&end=y', where x = starting point in seconds and y=end point in seconds.

When you go to the new URL, the video will show up in full screen and start and stop at the defined points.

Embedding YouTube videos on WordPress

Find the video you want to embed. Let's use the same video above.

Click on Share, then Embed

Click Show more, then check Show player controls only.

Copy the highlighted code.

Go to your WordPress site and create a new post/page.

Click the Text tab and paste the code.

On that last step, you need to add 'start=x&end=y&' where x = starting point in seconds and y=end point in seconds.

There you have it! What videos are you going to embed in your website? Remember to do the steps above so you can quickly give the information your audience needs.

This does not work on Chrome or Safari. HOWEVER, the method works with some slight adjustments.
1. Follow the embed instructions
2. Edit the embed link from the YouTube page (i.e. don't paste it on another website)
3. Copy and paste everything into the URL bar
4. Delete everything after the end=95
5. Share this link

Here is what the link would look like when completed:

Notice the 'v' has been replaced with 'embed'

Hello Brighton, I have followed the instructions for starting and ending exactly and it starts where I want it to but does not end. Plays till the rest of the video. Any suggestions?

I an a math instructor and use videos to help my students. This will be a big help in directing my students to a specific part of the video that deals with a particular concept in a math problem. Thank you for this. I just subscribed!

It worked. Thanks. I can now start and stop on a long video of a church service to just play the right bit of an interview on my site.

Hi!!! I was so excited as I used the slightly modified version for a MAC and it worked but then I tried to use the modified URL and put it in clip grab so I could then embed it in a PP presentation and it reverted to the whole clip. Do you have any suggestions? I'd be grateful!

QUESTION: Does anyone know how to embed an excerpt into a wordpress site? I played around with variations on this method, but could not find the right one. Thanks!

"&end=[number]" doesn't copy when I enter in new tab. Tried Mark Kreiner's directions, replacing 'v' with 'embed' and it still doesn't work. Hmm.

Namaste, Pranam,

*How can we customise start & end time of video in YouTube App?*
Can you guide me on it.
Thank You.

Excellent really clear explanation. I need to do this however inside a YouTube playlist. Is there a way? (I mean to start and end a section of a single video in the playlist....)

Trying to follow these instructions - I have Safari on my Mac - but can't see the Embed command that you showed below the video. There is only SHARE and embed is not one of the options I can see.

I liked the video because it was so easy to understand. But I didn't read the comments alerting me that the method doesn't work on chrome. It would be helpful to update the video with that caveat at the start.

End code didn't work for me in chrome or in Firefox.

Copy original URL in address bar of video to be shared.
Paste URL in Notepad or any word processor (or if you want to save a couple of clicks, then paste it directly into the text box of app where it will be shared: email, SMS, YT, FB, etc.)
Within the URL, find and delete: "watch?v=".
Replace that section with: "embed/".
Now, add to the end of the URL the start and end times in this format: "?start=x&end=y", where x and y represent your start and end points given in total seconds. (i.e. - 3:17 or three minutes and 17
seconds would be written as 197, which is the total number of seconds in 3 minutes and 17 seconds)

For example:
Below is a URL of a video from which I want to share a specific section.

I wish to share the section which begins at 4:21 and ends at 5:13

Therefore, by editing the URL per above instructions, I will create a new URL which looks like this:

Hi, so if I wanted to start a video at 10secs then end at 15secs then start recording using the same video again at 35secs to 40 secs how can this be done? Thanks

Thanks Brighton, you are awesome. I've looked at several videos on you tube but none of them worked for me. I did the start and end of the video successfully but at the end it still showed other you tube videos. Is there a way I can stop the video before it shows other videos on you tube. Thanks for you answer.
