Dr Clara Humpston is a Research Fellow in Youth Mental Health Methodology at the Institute for Mental Health.

A significant proportion of individuals affected by distressing and persistent voice-hearing (also called auditory-verbal hallucinations) do not respond well to antipsychotic medication or psychological therapy. Can their own brain help them better control their voices? Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging is one such potential intervention that might be useful in the clinic in the near future, where individuals living with problematic voices train to regulate their own brain activities in order to reduce the severity of their voices and reduce their impact on daily life.
