The Universe isn't actually expanding, And to understand why, Is to first consider the fact once everything is quantified and summed, the result is a single closed and isolated system that equates to 1 and yes a "FINITE", This means if accelerating expansion is observed, we must also consider what is reciprocating, and therefore it is obvious if a mass such as Near-Vacuum is expanding, then some other Mass or Matter must be reciprocating.

Simplistically as Near-Vacuum matter "And yes I know the current consensus does not treat Near-Vacuum as matter" anyway as Near Vacuum gets more energetic "Relatively more repulsive" then all mass that is not as energetic or as repulsive must be reciprocating as in the energy is being stored, ergo we must consider the obvious and that is "Fusion", Atoms are basically areas just like Near-Vacuum, but the space therein has been merged "energy has been stored or opposing momentum has been cancelled out" ergo a less energetic space such as Gas, Liquid & Solid Matter, what's important is to treat all space via a ratio of Mass/Energy, much as one does in GR "Space-Time", but we treat the entire Universe right down to the Quantum level, to consist of the same Mass/Energy constituents, Mind you if we do, we may have to fudge some quanta into our equation so that this model can also be with much the same disparity that currently exists..

This is definitely mind boggling. The explanation is not that the galaxies are "moving apart", but rather some force (possibly Dark Energy) is causing space to expand between the galaxies, and the only evidence available for the expansion is red shift, which indicates that the light itself (from extremely distant objects, like other galaxies) is becoming stretched.

The rate of this expansion is accelerating as measurements show, however the speed of the galaxy's movement through space (moment

Congratulations to Saul Perlmutter and his 2 colleagues for the Nobel Prize in Physics 2011. Unfortunately, they could not explain the cause of the accelerated expansion of the universe.
The answer lies in the following two publications:

Scientific publication by Hans Lehner in:
GENERAL SCIENCE JOURNAL, April 26, 2013
Discovery and detection of "dark energy" = "Supernovae Energy"?
Hans Lehner:
GENERAL SCIENCE JOURNAL, March 30, 2013
Discovery and detection of "dark matter" in magnetism?

Black holes only have an influence on a small area surrounding them, definatly not powerful enough to have that kind of effect..not on the huge scales of the known universe anyway.

what if its not so much an energy pushing the universe apart, but a gradual thinning out of spacetime as its slowly pulled into black holes?

Posh spice ? Did you come here on a time machine ? Yah...not so much a red carpet walker since 2000 :)

Speek? Probably because it is not sustainable, nor is it a topic of his lecture.

I really miss having a DOE secretary with a brain. :/

Fantastic lecture. To Perlmutter, Schmidt, and Riess, thank you for your work.

The Universe would appear to accelerate for periods of time.

Interesting and lucid for us laypeople!

Thanks!
