Current vs Future VW California Sizes

Today we're looking at the size difference between the current and FUTURE VW California - looking at the T6.1 VW California Beach and the T7 Multivan Long Version (the base for the next generation of VW Califonia models).

I know there will be a lot of uncertainty around the T7 Multivan based California, especially to do with sizes, and that's a fair concern. I, for one, am remaining open to the idea of a smaller 'Weekender' style California, but I realise that won't be for everyone.

I'd stick with the T6.1 . It's just a better all round vehicle to have camping. The new one just doesn't look like it'll fit the job

Multivan is just too small - time to be realistic. If there is no new T7 van Cali - then its done. No way could I accept any smaller space than in T6.1.
So the future will be new T7 3rd party conversions which will be actually bigger than T6.1
In my opinion - PS I have a T6.1 Cali

T7 Long Wheel Base is too long at 5, 17 meters (standard underground garages are 5 meters long) and it’s height at only 1, 90 cm (vs. 1, 99 of T6) is not enough: tall people touch the tailgate when is open. Also T7 kitchen seems right for Barbie use. As T7 is not a van but a car (=new Sharan), conclusion is that new T7 is a completely wrong vehicle. I own a T6 California Beach (two seater bench) and, sorry, I will never downgrade to T7.

I think the generation T5-T6.1 will be a future classic. The interior design is great. I own a T6.1 4motion and that should be the first and last california in our family.

I'd love a Plug-in Hybrid of the California 6.1, but doubt there ever will be.. By the way do you know if the 6.1 will still be sold after the 7 will be released? Thank you for sharing so much info with us

I much prefer the 6.1. I'm really starting to worry where VW are going with their vans, which are not "Just vans, but they are VW vans", vans with such an amazing heritage, so loved by many!
I do not think the "Ford Transporter" will go down very well. I do hope it will not have the disaster of a Ford "wet belt" engine!!
The good thing is, I am sure proper VW vans will hold their value much better than all the new stuff coming out...

Just ordered a T6.1, I love the design and I would never buy the first version of a new car. In addition to that I can’t imagine that the new one will be cheaper ;)

Hi Chris, thank you for your quality videos, they are great. I like a few things on the new T7, double doors, and a hybrid option.
But it seems that to get your main indoor table out, you would have to go outside of the van to access it, not great if it is poring down with rain.
Is this the case?

I read an article yesterday that the EU Parliament is currently voting to raise the maximum weight on the B driving license from 3500 kg to 4250 kg. It would be great news for VW to make an all electric camper van.😍

I know that you guys in the UK aren’t in the EU anymore. But I live in Sweden and VW is a German company, which gives them the advantages too, and maybe it will come to you as well😉

The T7 just seems like a Sharhanblaxy variant. Im getting a T6.1 LWB Multivan ( 7 seater ) which is 5.3M long. Perfect for my needs and turns into a great usable camper too with the Vanessa mattress / kitchen. Plenty of room.
Sit 3 adults side by side in both and you'll soon find out the limitations of the Golf platform in the T7.
Get a nice T6.1 2.0 Tdi while you can 👍

I've had a T5, T5.1, and a T6. Personally, I feel the T5.1 was the sweet spot and the best van I had. As for the T7? I don't want a Ford! Silly move for VW in my opinion!

Hola desde España!! pienso que la esencia furgoneta Camper la vw t7 la pierde por completo, es mas un turismo, por otro lado pienso que en un futuro se cotizara mucho mas la ultima version vw T6.1 pues es la ultima versión con autentica esencia Camper.

Thought very hard about waiting for the California Concept. After a saw the Multivan in Wrexham, and that the T6.1 is now available in 4Motion, we put our order in for the T6.1. Should arrive in May.

Firstly thanks for all the videos. We had 6m motorhomes for the first decade of this century. WE Have just brought our first vw california ocean from your Preston branch. The reason being many fold but in connection with this video it was down to size so it wouldfit in the garage ( better insurance quote. I imagine that the new California will have teething problems and a much higher price. Whereas the 6.1 has had them sorted out and probably will be discounted to time the change over on the factory floor as well as having none transferred items add free gratis. Conclusion horses for courses.

The only way the MV will appear to have more space is if the designers, which seems to be the case, drastically limit storage space.
