I just bought mine ( off of amazon sorry) since i live in a area where it gets colder and snows more. I will use this as I travel as i travel to Alabama for christmas

It depends on what you mean by "regular". The UV-5R is a walkie talkie, or HT (handheld transceiver), but is not for use as an FRS/GMRS radio, if that is what you mean. It is an amateur or "ham" radio and requires an amateur radio license to operate as a transceiver.

the signal strength indicator does actually work, i dunno if this is a recent update or not but they do work

Did u know that u can program the baofeng uv-5r as a police scanner without using chirp? Here in the netherlands we got p2000 frequency, this is police ambulance and firefighters.the frequency is 169.650.

I also took off PTT button or TX button chip and its rubbers (except monitor/flashlight button) with longnose plice to shorten that button as well as Call button, I crazy glued with some plastic from lid container and put some rubber felt on noth PTT and Call button, So. That button is now untouched and cannot be reversible anymore.

Just use Baofeng as a scanner or receiver. 200 Mhz - 260 Mhz worked on UV-5R with the help of CHIRP software. So you can transmitt your wireless microphone to UV-5R Receiver.

I have a Baofeng T1 radio, I restored it from the factory. my problem is to reset and when I use the softweare and the usb cable I give it either on the screen control + R or control + W it shows me 00 666.666 I do it with the up and down arrow and it does not show me the 16 or 19 or 20 frequencies it should have. What am I doing wrong or what am I missing?

You forgot to mention this is NOT legal to use outside of the amateur radio bands. Businesses and anyone transmitting between 150-174 & 450-520 must be using an FCC Part 90 compliant radio, which the UV-5R's are not.
