Is Windows Update Getting WORSE?!

Why has Microsoft taken more and more control over Windows Update out of the hands of users?

I switched to Linux when Windows 7 started secretly downloading the Windows 10 upgrade.

I don't need to spend time fighting my computer for the rest of my life.

Microsoft needs to learn how Linux does things. I remember having a Debian install on a Laptop years ago, like 8-10 years ago... and...

1). Updating was 100% manual.
2). Updating almost never required a restart unless it was the Kernel (and even then, the computer said 'you *should* restart *soon* ')
3). Updating only took 30-60 seconds even with 10+ pieces of software needing updating, not 5 minutes+.
4). The updating software told you *exactly* what it was downloading, *exactly* how large it was, and *exactly* what was currently being done, instead of a blank progress meter that doesn't work or isn't accurate of the time.

 Linux has had this crap in the bag forever, what's Microsoft's excuse?

One of the major reasons why my work computer is Linux. I ask the computer for Updates when *I* want.

I use mac os x, linux and windows 10 each day. Windows is the only OS to take AGES to update and to reverse updates on regular basis. So annoying.

What I don't get is why the updates need to take so long. On Linux, you download new updates, and while they are installing, you just continue working. Afterwards, you just restart the apps that were updated, or you reboot your computer when there was a kernel update. Even if updates were forced on you, and even with forced reboots, it would still be less painful than a Windows update.
