Swami Sarvapriyananda: Mandukya Upanishad, 5 of 6

Of all the Upanishads (sacred Sanskrit texts), the Mandukya Upanishad is the shortest — consisting of just 12 sentences! — however, it is considered the most direct and the most powerful. The commentary, or Karika, composed by Gaudapada Acharya 1,500 years ago, it is regarded as the highest text of nondual Vedanta. Its goal is nothing short of transcendence of sorrow and the attainment of unshakeable serenity by the direct intuition of your own nondual nature. From January 2020, Talk 5 of 6.

Swami Sarvapriyananda is the minister and spiritual leader of the Vedanta Society of New York. He joined the Ramakrishna Math and Mission in 1994, received sannyas ten years later, and served in the Hollywood Temple. He was the acharya of the monastic probationers’ training center at Belur Math, and also served as the vice principal of the Deoghar Vidyapith Higher Secondary School. He regularly gives retreats and spiritual talks throughout the United States.

Can we request Swami to present his experiences at Harvard for almost a year? What he learnt, experienced there in this period and what did he contributed to those whom he talked or discussed? It will be a good

1. Relate AUM (followed by silence) to Waking, Dreaming, Sleeping & pure consciousness.
2. Entire universe is nothing but sound OM
3. The silence at the end of OM, not the physical silence, but it points to you the consciousness which illuminates the silence.
4. The  consciousness that pervades the silence is you the Brahman

Lecture on AUM is fantastic. Also all objects in the universe can be finely divided into electron, proton etc. Again these are nothing but only comprising of an energy source vibrating or moving around in wave form. In other words physically there is no mass for these(they show some weight due to action of gravity between energy source point and earths gravity). May be they exert force due to the inter action of energy and gravity.
Hence what a study of enquiring to self or AUM is very very true. May be this what is refered as maya
Swamy's way of explaining in his lecture is wonderful.

Unable to express my deep feeling of gratitude for the nice explanation on Mandukya Upanishad which I always used to think that it can’t be digested easily. Thankyou Swameejee, with trikarana shuddhi.

Most Americans now grew up with the story of Dumbo the Elephant (I remember loving him as a kid.) It looks like he was derived from Ganesha... Here is one of the "summaries" found online of Dumbo's story: The shortest of Disney's major animated features Dumbo involves a baby elephant with unusually large ears. Ostracized from the rest of the circus animals, poor Dumbo is even separated from his mother, who is chained up in a separate cage after trying to defend her child. Only brash-but-lovable Timothy Mouse offers the hand of friendship to Dumbo, encouraging the pachyderm to exploit his "different" qualities for fame and fortune. After indulging in a vat of booze, Dumbo awakens in a tall tree. Goaded by a group of jive-talking crows, Dumbo discovers that his out-sized ears have given him the ability to fly.

Love his teaching method and depth of knowledge, which is awesome and mostly extempore. I am reminded of the poem by Oliver Goldsmith about ‘The Village Schoolmaster’. - “And still they gaz'd and still the wonder grew, that one small head could carry all he knew”. Thank you Swami. Koti Pranaam.

Great and brilliant exposition. The tejas on the face of the swami is unmistakabe. But i wish to point out in all humility that he had taken care of these :. 1 Silence after OM also underlies OM the way turiya (the fourth) underlies the other three (waking, dream and deep sleep). 2. He quotes a westerner's story, where initially Brahman was all by itself and got bored and therefore decided to create a world. I am sure there is no such thing as boredom in Brahman ! Boredom is when there is a sense of time but Brahman does not exist in time for eternity to get bored (as told in the story) but exists in timelessness. Also there are verses that describe Brahman as ever new and hence no boredom is possible for brahman ! Creation is out of a sense of play (leela) and not due to boredom ! 3. I wish the professors at Harvard follow the traditions of Vedanta if they wish to learn and not get used to the idea that they can demand how vedanta should be taught to them. Vedanta does no need the stamp of approval of a business school however good the school may be. Harvard does not go to the himalayan ashrams looking for approval of how they run their business programmes. The bee should come to the flower and never the flower to the bee.
