We are often asked "Have you ever been tased?" If you work at Irmo Police Department, the answer is YES. (A very unenthusiastic yes, to be quite honest.) In order for our officers to carry a taser, they must take an extensive class, pass a written test, demonstrate profiency with the weapon and then they have the option to be tased. The manufacturer does not require someone qualified to carry the taser to be tased, however, exposure allows our officers to fully understand the effect the taser should have on someone as well as experience the effect it has on their own bodies. (PARTICIPATION BY THE OFFICER IS VOLUNTARY and we currently have 100% participation.)
The taser is an energy weapon that is designed to physically immobilize the human body, reducing the risk of injury to the individual and officer during a physical confrontation. During the 5 seconds that the taser is in effect, officers can move in safely to control and detain the individual.
