Scientist H. George Wells (Rod Taylor) builds a time machine, and despite the warning from his friend David (Alan Young) against "tempting the laws of providence," decides to visit the future. Jumping ahead 14 years, he observes changes in women's fashion. Jumping ahead 40, he meets David's son (also Young) amid a terrible war. Finally, he travels thousands of years ahead to discover a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by humanoid Eloi and the monstrous Morlocks that feed on them.

Made in 1960, set in the 1800s and moving forward in time. You get to see a 1960 perspective of Victorian life and old school special effects. Then a 1960 perspective of what the future might be like, including a nuclear war, which would have been a big fear at the time. I love old stuff, man. Vintage science fiction.

To me, this always been my personal back to the future. My ultimate time travel film.

I like how he made a machine that can travel through time but the idea of a machine that can move through the air almost befuddles him.

Always loved that time travel music as it sounds so experimental and trippy.

Saw in the theater in early 60's when I was 10, my favorite movie of all time, just watched again today. Such a great classic.

Loved this film since a child. Suspend your disbelief and you can be immersed in this beautiful quaint film. Rod Taylor is great as the inventor. Love the soundtrack too, the sounds and images are exhilerating. One of the best science-fiction films. The book was published 1895, yet in the 1960 film, it includes both world wars, plus a future glimpse of 1966 then forward to 802701.
What will the world be like then!

H.Wells! Time Machine, Island of Dr Moreau, Invisible Man, The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes, The Crystal Egg, The Man Who Could Work Miracles... All reminds me I was a book reader once, before PC games and anime took over...

Cant help myself, but the acting is so amazing and much better than in the remake, that has more special effects, but the magic in the little moments, in the little things of this scene of 1960 catches me much much more

There something about the Victorian setting and the antique looking flying contraptions perfectly represented in this film . That's the charm ..the second half of the movie tends to drag on I always felt ..but still a classic and great special effects

In 2025, this movie will be as far from us as the book was to this movie (65 years). Kind of wild to think about.

I always liked the way the mannequin changed though the many years but the wooden window frame never rotted

Watched this last night--I saw it with my dad at some point when I was a teen or early adult. Dad was a kid when it came out. It was a fun (be it silly) ride, especially listening to his explanation for sci-fi jargon. Interesting POV of life in the 1960s and how they viewed 60 years past, now that we're also 60 years beyond 1960.
