I can tell that Trey just loves it when the tune takes a darker turn - it's hard to contain the laughter that rises up FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WELL. This song is so fun

18:19 shit’s pretty gnarly here and some nice sections preceding it. This is weird evil Phish with some great hose mixed in taboot, don’t know how anyone who’s liked them anytime over the last 40 years thinks this sucks.
I get it with some of these soul songs, (though when they jam the shit out of them I find I don’t care what it came out of in the end) but there’s been some great stuff mixed in over the years, songs I really love, and at one time I was one of the most critical old 90’s fan you could be, but by 2014 with Thrilling Chilling Sounds, and then especially ‘15 onwards they’ve made me a true believer again. Now I just appreciate that they still love doing this. I went to 1st night MSG and heard such beautiful variation in jamming styles, felt like they went all over the map finding ways to take us to new heights. Spit open and melt I did indeed 🫠

I have a theory about The Well...I think Trey self-consciously wrote a cringey first half of the song with lyrics that are "love and light on steroids" like "Every rainbow has a blue jay" and "There's a scallop in the coinpurse" so that the second half of the song has something to contrast with. I'm not sure the second half of the song would hit quite as hard and evil if it wasn't following such a sunny, cheesy first half. What an awesome addition to the repertoire!
