So many of the heroes in this movie were real heroes. We have to insure future generations remember theses heroes. We owe all we have to this men and women who left their lives behind to save our future.

Quite a few of the actors were ww2 veterans

One cool thing about these old ww2 movies is that most of the actors were actual veterans of the war.

And as a Norwegian this movie was an insult. Two of the three who escaped were Norwegians and one Norwegian who was among the executed was the Spearhead behind the plan not the British officer

Yes, in the interest of storytelling the movie does deviate from the book in numerous ways. BUT in my opinion both the book and the movie complement each other perfectly.
If you want the whole "nuts and bolts" story read the book by Paul Brickhill who by the way was a prisoner in Stalg Luft III himself.

250 attempted to escape, 76 made it out of the camp, three made a "home run". It's not hard.

Brutal retaliation?..POWs were warned several times (after failed attempts) that they would be shot if they tried again.

Did you know that when US troops got word that the Germans were executing escape POWs they started executing captured Germans. The US Army knew about it, but no one was prosecuted. General Patton hoped it or didn’t get out. Did you ever hear the saying what goes around, comes around?

Yes they were "sentenced for war crimes" but alas the Cold War began and alot of these ex SS and Gestapo officials were used by both sides because they had information and knowledge that was very useful. So much for "justice".
