You can get "infected" without having symptoms. There are probably thousands if not millions of bacteria (like your first disease) entering our body through food, water, air, other humans or animals every day. It's just that most of these don't do too much, are easily neutralized by our immune system or are actually beneficial. Something like a parasite/worm spreading without anyone noticing would be a bit unlikely, though.
