Thanks for the comment but it's not just about towing. It's also about braking. For instance the SAE J2807 sets a standard for holding the truck on a hill while hooked up to a heavy load with the brake. This is where it gets dangerous and potentially deadly.

You guys should do the ike gauntlet with the trucks loaded up to the max towing capacity for the trucks. See which manufacturer has put the most magic dust on their trucks (Ford and GM). The Tundra and Ram has honestly probably the most accurate towing numbers of any halfton. The Toyota is certified with the "towing standard".

Well here in Canada (probebly in the us also ) there is a law that says that any trailers that weight more then 3000 pounds need its own braking system, so you kind of reducing the amount of braking needing by the truck, But I agree there should be a certain distance require to stop a trailer exemple on a hill or something like that.

I've always thought that tow ratings were overly conservative myself. I've gone over them many times & not only did I find the power to be competent to much higher weights, but I never caused any damage (twisted frames, etc). Even looking at the huge incentive they have to fudge numbers they don't want you to break anything that's under warranty.

well I don't know about what my truck is rated for, but I have a 2000 chevy 1500 with a 5.3 and an extra set of leaf springs (so technically not stock) and I've got a gooseneck hitch in it and have pull a 16' gooseneck livestock trailer with it. trailer weighs about 3000lbs and have had 6 1000lbs steers in it before and it handles it alright. I would imagine that ratings a somewhat conservative just so they don't have to back on warranty work for something caused by being way overloaded.

I would like to see a fastest from 0-60-0 with the FLT tow boat hooked up. Leave the bias off and let the truck take the full brunt of bringing it all to a stop.

I think towing rate its set because many things but the engine. A V8 with more or less 400 ft/lb i bet it'd tow 50, 000 pounds or more maybe but what about the stress in the frame, suspension and most of all overheating transmissions. So i dont think towing limit is set because "the engine does not have the power"
