NEW YORK CITY — Scientists at New York University have discovered a previously unseen human organ, according to a new study.
Called the interstitium, the organ is a system of interconnected lymph fluid pockets that found throughout, according to the research.
Researchers say the interstitium is a body-wide structure of lymph-fluid, collagen and proteins. The organ is also believed to comprise 20 percent of all bodily fluids, according to a CBS report.
The study also found that the interstitium had helped cancer cells move from infected areas to other areas of the body via the lymphatic system. NYU pathologist Neil Theise described this as a "waterslide", according to a quote in a New Scientist report on the study.
The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.
