2013 Honda Accord Deadly Electronic Power Steering Failure. The 2013–2015 Honda Accord is being investigated after 107 reports of loss of steering control during driving under normal conditions. The 2013 Honda Accord has accrued over 1,000 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Of these complaints, over half involve issues with the 2013 Accord’s electric power steering and other electrical components/systems.
Owners documented a variety of conditions occurring, namely unexpected veering of their vehicle while driving and difficulty steering (either steering feeling too firm or too loose). These conditions were reported to occur with and without the electric power steering warning light being illuminated.
The NHTSA closed the investigation after finding early-life failures due to early production issues have already failed, with a declining overall failure rate. Unfortunately, no recalls have been issued by Honda as a result.

I had this issue on a 2013 honda pilot total loss of control, for no reason, I was probably at 30mph joining the highway. Thanks for putting this up I have been searching all over youtube of people who went through it.

I am definitely dealing with this problem now. Sometimes the steering wheel will not un-lock after starting the engine and once the power steering was very jerky and failed to operate smoothly in either direction, often getting stuck in a single direction.

My 2014 Honda Accord V6 (original Owner, 57K miles) veered hard right, then hard left on its own accord, causing me to sideswipe a guardrail at 70 MPH. Honda stonewalled me, but the NTSA intervened and at least Honda replaced the steering components on their dime. I am lucky to escape unhurt from this. I agree, that Honda needs an immediate recall.

My daughter's 2013 Accord just started doing this. It has 140k miles. I'll have to get the honda to pull the codes.

That's what happens when you can't leave well enough alone. The old way wasn't this dangerous. Hi tech isn't always the best way.

I have a 2012 honda civic. It is a no fluid system, all electronic. I had to replace the computer brain for the steering. The new controller was over $500. I did the work myself. I just happen to have the code reader that would also reset the steering. The dealership quoted me $2600 to fix it and it would be an extra $150 to reset it. I had absolutely no steering for over two weeks. Honda Corp is not what it use to be

Wait, looks you have a manual too! Nice! #savethemanuals

I had this issue happen on my 2014 Honda Accord LX manual sedan. I think this was sometime roughly during the summer of 2021. I had gotten the car during the beginning of 2017, with only 32k miles, but had only replaced the starter motor around 43k miles or so, and nothing else major, besides the alternator and belt tensioner, both around 82k miles.

Anyhow, I was driving home from a long 2-hr commute, and went to take a right turn at around 15 mph. As I was mid turn and braking to slow down (had also just downshifted into 2nd, for you manual folks out there), the steering suddenly locked up where it was for a full second and I slammed on my brakes. Right after that, everything shut off and came back on immediately like normal, but some dash cluster lights stayed on for a split second, not even long enough for me to take a video or photos.

Anyhow, I researched the issue and was surprised that it wasn’t deemed as a national recall issue. I also found the official Honda TSB, but supposedly after a Honda tech verified whether or not my car was in that VIN range, they refused to continue with the TSB that I, myself, had provided. I’m not even sure what they did at that multi-point diagnostic that they do at their “stealership”, but I’m damn sure they were too lazy and incompetent to take my issue seriously.

They did tell me that my “computer” didn’t record any sort of electric power steering (EPS) malfunction, nor did anything else abnormal come up. I myself thought that it might have been an electric issue, being that the power steering itself is mainly powered through electricity. I did not remove the fuse, but had it ever happened a 2nd time, idk if I would ever survive that in a MORE dangerous situation.

I ended up trading in the car at around 87k miles, but no one seemed to care about the issue. These manual models are highly sought after, so my car was bought literally 3-4 days after it was set out on a dealership lot I had traded it into. I sure hope that girl that bought my old care doesn’t run into issues, or God forbid, get injured or worse from that issue…..

Also, I have a 2014 Honda Accord EX-L V6 (navi) manual coupe, I had gotten the summer of 2022 with about 90k miles. I haven’t had any issues with that at all, and I’m currently at 117k miles. I also don’t tend to do any serious electric modifications (big sound systems, etc.).

2013 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L. Have around 125k miles

Steering wheel wants to go to the right and gives resistance going to the left. Have gone to multiple mechanics and they say it’s an electrical problem dealing with the steering rack and pinion.

At times the steering feels smooth and has no issues. Other times, car wants to drive itself and is difficult to drive. No idea what to replace or do. Recently had to change the ABS module, and put a new starter in.

Any advice is appreciated, sad to see I’m not the only one dealing with this issue. Hopefully Honda rights this wrong and replaces faulty component.

Johnson, did your Honda 2013 Accord electric power steering get fixed? I have a similar 2013 Honda Accord with a V6 that the electric power steering has failed like yours did. Very dangerous. My car is a salvage title and Honda will not warranty the electric steering gear even though it failed and turns on it own. I’m trying to find out what parts need replaced. Thanks.
