I was WRONG about Overwatch 2

With BlizzCon 2021 behind us and Blizzard FINALLY having broken the silence about Overwatch 2 news, Content Creators like myself finally have something to talk about.

Though first, I want to talk about a video I made following the initial reveal of Overwatch 2. In my attempt of explaining "What is Overwatch?" despite us not even having a release date, I was trying to tell you everything you have to know about Overwatch 2.

Functionally, that video still serves that purpose. But with this Overwatch 2 Behind the Scenes experience we got during BlizzConline I feel like I should revisit some aspects of that video to turn into a discussion.

We hope to get more Overwatch 2 News in 2021 but so far I have to say tha all the changes they have shown, as well as the new PvE and Story content, left me rather impressed. The cutscenes and general detail in Overwatch 2 has convinced me that my initial classification of this product as a "PvE Expansion" might be wrong after all.

So here we go: Overwatch 2 Explained.. Once more.

It's like that Torb voiceline that goes "Completion date? *chuckles* When it's done."

I don’t care even if overwatch 2 comes out in 2 years I just hope it’s fun and entertaining to play

It's almost like the opposite CDPR did. The OW Devs are crushing down the hype pandemic, and working on the game with a laser focus as a result since they now have a wide open schedule with no end date.

Ok, ok, this time Jeff blessed us. Maybe we didn’t get a release date but this is still a lot more than I expected.

When a new map releases I take time to go around the entire thing and appreciate all the details. Like the cloud animations in the clothing shop in Paris. I also take that time to find all the nasty hamster grapple spots x3

The audio rework is somehow my favorite news from the whole event lol. Idk why but I'm fucking psyched for realistic sounds fx

Good takeaway: OW2 looks extremely promising both in the PvP updates as well as the new PvE expansion.

Bad takeaway: OW1 is still going with a lack of content and smaller balancing updates to prepare us for OW2 gameplay so it isn't such a shock.

Bonus takeaway: They vocalized they won't be so silent this year, which is promising that we'll most likely recieve at least quarterly updates about what exactly they're working on.

My personal understanding: They announced OW2 and set up the demo on the OW1 engine. They spent most of 2020 designing the engine and system updates, and now that they've concluded that, they've started work on maps and heroes. This is evident by the fact that they've only got two maps completely rendered, and another two conceptualized but unworked. It's also pretty clear this was prerecorded so it's likely done a month or two in the past, and there's a lot more content than we think that's done.

From my understanding the engines and systems the games run on takes far more time than actually designing levels. I'm really excited, just extremely frustrated that these balance changes they're thinking of implementing aren't being released in OW1 until OW2. It feels like the PvP updates could and should just be patched in to OW1. If the main selling point for OW2 is the PvE content, why not start rolling out the PvP updates (at least balancing) for OW1? Rein's in a terrible state and we've been asking for charge cancel for YEARS. multiple firestrikes meh that's just extra dps output which he arguably doesn't need, but the charge cancel is a necessity and creates a huge skill cieling for rein. Tanks giving less ult charge suddenly makes monkey and hog significantly more viable as in higher elos they pretty much just operate as ult batteries. Farm heroes like sombra reaper genji and tracer will have to change playstyles and the game will become more pick oriented rather than CD oriented as a result of the chagnes they're talking about doing.

While I'm optimistic for the future I'm fearful that Blizzard might kill the game before its released because of the stale gameplay balancing we're getting in OW1 since 2019. At least organized play is really fun.. and oh wait they nuked the path to pro in favor of some points system on gamebattles that requires us to grind at least 5 games a week in to qualify for Contenders/Trials, while keeping prize pools so low that players can't afford to live off the income from it.

And in the interview they also said that they were going to be way more talkative about ow2. No more going dark boys.

"Passive abilities granted to each roll." If you want to experience that concept go play paladins. I enjoy both games and I will admit I prefer the free class building you can do on characters. It really does keep the game from getting stale as well as bring out more skill requirements. Because you not only have to understand the character, you also have to understand how to counter builds.

Also I love you said "brawler" . I try to use this term to help people understand what a tank is actually supposed to be doing, but because so many people only limit their ideas of what a tank is supposed to be like they don't get it. For example rien, winston, Hammond, and DVA. Are all brawl tanks. Here is why, rien is terrifying once he enters a contesting battle and knock people around keeping them out of position. Hammond is capable of the same thing but in a different way. Winston's ability to cause isolation and separation of enemies, and DVA being able to block projectiles while bombarding the supports and dps. A brawl tank is the tank that is going to be the one making the battle going in your favor because they are capable of fighting once they get everyone in position. After that it will depend on on your team taking advantage of the situation. This is why players need to stop hesitating once the tank has done this in order to win a match.

Ay! finally part of the discord squad.

Edit: That didn't last long but I'll still support your content and enjoy it.

It’s crazy to think that we probably won’t get it for at least 2 years

It looks good to me, I always enjoy story missions. With how they are changing some of the heroes to make them overall better, who do you think is one of the characters who most needs a proper improvement?

We already know Blizzard isn't fully "getting rid" of 2CP maps. We already know all the old CP maps, like most OW1 maps, will be added to the Hero Missions mode as playable maps. So we'll still see Temple of Anubis and all the other 2CP maps in the game, except likely just as PVE maps.

I have no idea why but for some reason, after starting, I just watched this entire video with subtitles in the thumbnail on my phone, ready to stop and just keep on scrolling but I never did. For 10 minutes. I guess it just really resonated with me, so here is a comment to make up for the missed viewer. :D

5:37 They confirmed that would be getting the UI and gameplay improvements, so everyone is playing the same game, and that they would eventually be combining the games.

BlizzCon made me INCREDIBLY hyped for OW2, I'm even more excited now than I ever was, I think it's going to be a fantastic upgrade and I hope they take their time on finishing it. I don't want it rushed, if them taking their time thus far and not setting down a release date has allowed them this much progress that they teased, then I beg them to just keep at this pace.

I think I would still call this an expansion pack though, they're treating it the way they treated their WoW expansions. It should be like, "Overwatch: Null Sector" or something instead of just OW2, this isn't a call of duty game. if it was a part 2 i think they'd have a completely different roster of characters and a different timeline or perspective or something. Regardless, I can't WAIT to get my hands on this game
