Summer Wars is a great fun coming of age story, full of heart warming and badass moments. However in this video I want to talk a bit about the pillar that stood at the center of it all, Sakae Jinnouchi.

Other anime in the videos:
- Kara no Kyoukai
- Fate / Zero
- Kekkai Sensen
- Deca-dence

she’s a character that’s stuck with me all these years as well, love when anime is that good.

As of this moment, the wonderful electric grandmother moved into the lives of children and father. She became integral and important. She became the essence. As of this moment, they would never see lightning, never hear poetry read, never listen to foreign tongues without thinking of her. Everything they would ever see, hear, taste, feel would remind them of her. She was all life, and all life was wondrous, quick, electrical – like Grandma.

You know Grandma is a massive W when a world ending AI considers her a threat out of anyone in the world.

One of the scenes that sticks with me the most from Summer Wars is the "battle" between grandma and Love Machine. The moment the AI begins to recognize the pattern of response is oriented around a single point, a symbol: grandma's symbol.
Its the moment the machine recognizes a true threat, a queen on the board, another general in play.
Through all the madness and panic, she is what catches its eye, she is what triggers its "fear response", because she was the mechanism via which a meaningful reply was given.
The Old Woman of the Warrior Clan, and her Clan, were a greater hazard than an entire government-corporate response.

1:40 if I recall correctly that is a picture of the grandma when she was young. and I just wanna go on a quick spiel about it.

THOSE EYES. THAT SMILE. I LIVED WITH THAT FACE. I LOVED THAT FACE. It's the face MY GRANDMA HAD. That is the warm, loving, unyielding (sometimes slightly annoying) fire of confidence in your loved ones! She KNOWS they are worth while. That they can do great things. Not ANYTHING, but GREAT THINGS. It shown further in the movies portrayal of gran. She shuts down doubt quick and sharp. Their is no uncertainty in her. She KNOWS they can do as she asks. She has true and well placed confidence in them. She earned that confidence by feeling what they feel, that's EMPATHY. She shared in their joy, in their sorrow, in pride, and grief... In their LIVES. She has learned by how they feel, where they have confidence, where they don't, when they will feel stressed or overwhelmed, and how to best give them the talk they need to be the best them she can help them be and if that means a kick in the pants so be it!

Often empathy is portrayed as soft and accommodating, as permissive, and coddling. That's still present with the grandma. How ever their is also a firm (grand)mothers hand ready and willing to pull you back quickly if you stray from the path. Their is a scowl and a "get in side and eat dinner idiot" waiting for you if she can't pull you back too! She isn't just giving people what they need. She is giving them what they need to GROW AND BE STRONG. If that happens to be a kick in the pants so be it. She KNOWS they can be great, because she has FELT what they feel with empathy. You get the feeling just looking at her (and from her looking at "YOU" Kenji) that she has learned to FEEL what a person is FEELING and determine if they are good or bad. Determine if they are a good fit for the family.

I LOVE. When empathy is portrayed this way. Not as a softness, but as firmness, an inner knowing and sense for peoples hearts. I makes my heart warm cause it reminds me of my gran.

Summer Wars released in 2009, and I watched it in 2012 just after the passing of my grand mother. I won't lie. I cried. I cried A LOT. It was the right movie at the right time to hit me right in my heart. I live in that type of family. So many members, and gatherings and people. and my grand mother was THAT EXACT TYPE OF PERSON. So this movie has become one of my all time faves. It brings up so much warmth and nostalgia for me not just for the movie it self but of those times when my gran pull us all together for a big gathering. It will always be the movie I suggest to someone looking for something ghibli like for that exact reason.
