Rain Man: A Timeless Tom Cruise Classic?

Many people think Tom Cruise dancing around in his underwear to Bob Seger in Risky Business is his most iconic scene. To others, it's him saying he feels the need for speed in Top Gun or infiltrating the vault in Mission: Impossible. Or "I want the truth!" Or "show me the money!" But, to me, one of the scenes that best sums up Tom Cruise as one of the coolest movie stars ever is his entrance in Barry Levinson's Rain Man. We see the smog-filled backdrop of Los Angeles as a Lamborghini flies across the screen. We see it's being transported to a car lot where Tom Cruise's Charlie Babbit, one of the most iconic eighties yuppies, inspects the car while The Belle Stars cover of "Iko Iko" fills the soundtrack. It's a memorable moment that was so potent composer Hans Zimmer, when he reteamed with Cruise on Mission: Impossible 2, couldn't help but riff on it by using another cover of "Iko Iko" on the soundtrack as Cruise's Ethan Hunt did the world's scariest rock climbing. In this episode of Tom Cruise Revisited, we look back at Rain Man, a movie that proved two things - in 1988, Tom Cruise was the world's biggest movie star, and he was a legit actor to boot.

Just watched Rainman on Tubi TV for about my 100th time since the 80s. It never gets old and the acting always amazes. Timeless classic.

Rain Man is one of my favourite movies and a very underrated performance by Tom Cruise - who at the time was overshadowed by the showy performance by co - star Dustin Hoffman.

I saw this movie in theaters when I was 10 years old, I went with my grandma and aunt then I begged my mom to take me to see it again a week later. This movie’s so important to me, Rain Man took the love I had for films and cranked it to 11. A classic of classics.

Cruise is solid actor: my faves include Color of Money, Eyes Wide Shut, The Firm, Rain Man w some legendary costars in some films. Watch again and you'll notice in some films he starts out somewhat a despised character but eventually transitions to a hero towards end of films. Very underrated 🌟

I have Asperger's Syndrome & was a year old when Rain Man was released. Mum told me she was recommended this movie & helped her understand my problems when I was really little.

I only watched Rain Main tonight for the first time and as an 80's kid I'm honestly ashamed it took me this long. I think 80's Tom is the best version of Tom. No big flashy stunts and sprints. Just acting and nailing it.

Cruise should have won an Oscar for this role. And he ewas robbed from other Oscars for Born on the 4th of July, Collatreral, The Last Samurai and Jerry Maguire.
