Three way light switching | Intermediate switch

This video shows how to wire a three way lighting circuit, this means that you can have three separate switches for example one in the hall way, one on the landing and one at the top of the stairs. To wire a three way lighting circuit you will need 2 two way switches and an intermediate switch. This video also shows how an intermediate switch works.

Great video. Taken the time to understand you video on two-way (XOR), and also the other proposed diagram in comments (XNOR), on how the circuit completes by thinking logical gates.
Which makes this straightforward to understand. The intermediate switch simply reverses the 2-way circuit path any time you click the switch - alternating between a XOR and XNOR.

Good job but once I was stuck with lights in a hotel rooms because the painter had done something and it took me days to find the correct wiring. It was damn hard. First, you have those lights in the ceiling that probably were either wired like PIR or junktion box and then to the switch then there were three switches and one of them turn them all on including the bathroom lights as well and then that main switch was also connected to the contactor in the consumer unit and to make things worse there were no marking except the wire heads sticking out messed up by a painter and it was no joke job. The main switch was also connected to the lights card reader and it was no joke to fix it.

Great video - thanks. I have inherited this set up but the first socket on the circuit has a three gang socket (Socket A) (running a hallway light, a cupboard light and an outside light on a PIR). The second switch (Socket B) only covers the hallway. I have however noticed that the outslide light only works when Socket B is in a certain position. It shouldnt be affected by socket B at all so am i right in thinking that socket B is feeding off the wrong live? Does that make sense?

Thanks for this. I’d be very interested in a video or advice as to how to remove an intermediate switch from a circuit. I am converting a three switch system to a single switch. I’ve successfully took one of the normal switches out of the circuit but not certain about what to do with the intermediate switch.
