Stoicism has endured as a viable philosophy precisely because of its practical applications to daily life and real world issues. It is not the fodder for hypothetical parlor games and philosophical hairsplitting.

Public life, the public sphere, includes more activities than politics. Non-political activities in the public sphere, e.g., helping stray pets, giving to a food pantry, by their nature reinforce adherence to the dichotomy of control. Political activities, by their nature, tempt us to rationalize situations where we want to think we have control. Worst of all, political actions can lead to rationalizing the need for external validation. We tell ourselves that we want people to like us for a supposedly higher purpose. I would expect that most of us end up the worse with that line of thinking.
