Your computer is also not meant to be a fireplace.... lol

I put all my data on E-mail and mention things that get the NSA to record it all. I then have a backup that will never be erased and will be I file a freedom of information act request. I have hundreds of thumb drives cheap. And for the files I really want to save, I put them to blue ray and keep them away from the house....in case of fire....I have them in the barn in a fireproof safe that is encased in concrete. I NEVER put data on any computer that Hillary has. It seems to get erased rather easily.

Thank you, Ken. Very good topic! With today's fast and powerful computers I am becoming a fan of virtual machines on a stable, long-term-support flavor Linux OS. Talk about SANDBOX! Still, even with the power of VM and snapshots on the fly we need to get offline with our data or POOF! It can all get lost. Very good advise, Ken! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all, and to all a good night!

Premature failure of the motor on drives larger than 4TB is a good tip.

People are obsessed with these full tower cases with ZERO 5.25in bays. "So good for airflow!" as if that's going to save them from their single m.2 boot drive, single 3.5in 4tb drive setup crapping out. Meanwhile, I buy 160gb hard drives by the dozen for use in a handy hot swap bay, 3.5in drives for long term storage, 2.5 inchers for ferrying data between workstations, and I burn permanent data onto 100gb mDisc metal medium Blurays that should retain the data for 1, 000 years. I toss people 1gb or 2gb SD cards like they are disposable floppies (Breaking out the r/w slider if it's more than just transient data I'm passing them), and most everyone in my circle has had to acquire external harddrive caddys, or at least an SD card reader, because I'm the asshole that won't buy another damn thumb drive.

JBOD is a multi drive storage configuration like RAID, but unlike RAID 1, 3, 5, 6, 10, etc that use mirroring or parity, it does not have redundancy. But unlike RAID 0 which uses spanning without redundancy, a single drive lose on a JBOD box doesn't take down all the storage. Many NAS are capable of using JBOD as well as different RAID levels, the distinction is just in their availability on the network. I absolutely agree on using SuperDuper and not clogging your system with unused crap. Keep up the good work.

Enjoyed this one too, your guarantee that I'm 'doing it wrong' missed the mark though, as ALL my work files are off my computer. Nothing I create is saved to the machine. Learned my lesson many years ago.

Don't see absolutely any issues with having a SSD for software and a magnetic drive for data. Having about 30 % of a 4 TB disc filled up, I do not see any issues with speed of read/write or access times. The data is double backed up of course.

I use a Samsung T5 1Tb as a portable drive. Indeed, it is much, much more reliable than a conventional spinning hdd. I also have a 512Gb sdd on my Fujitsu laptop and 480Gb Intel Optane 900p NVMe ssd as a primary system disk and hot data storage on my desktop. However, I do have numerous hdds for archives and backups, including 12Tb ang 8Tb ones.

I completely agree with everyhting that you said. I do however find it annoying when Western Digital solder the SATA bridge circuit board to the hard drive. This means i cant use it in a conventional hard drive dock. Its frustrating. Luckily i have never bought one. I have been given one through, a 1TB one. I took it apart when i was bored one night and found this irritating news out.

Thanks Ken!!! As always, helping me out with decisions ( sometimes small ones) that I seem to get myself stuck on

Can you do a tutorial on how to use super duper? And how to create a bootable clone? And why we need one? Thank you!

You are covering two separate topics in this video, data migration and primary disk backup. In regards to WIN PCs, I gave up on primary disk backup years ago because whenever I needed it, it didn't work (Windows). MS has gotten its act together with Windows History, which is included in Win10, so I have a separate hard disk dedicated to this automatic data backup. Then I migrate older data to hard drives on older PCs, via Quick Access in File Explorer ( a remnant of Homegroup), that now act as servers. Needless to say, there are always two copies of older data. Thanks.

I finally upgraded to the latest MacBook Pro and use a Samsung 1TB SSD. What solution do you have for longterm storage of images, NAS (SSD or Spinners ? Ironwolf), RAID, or cloud or combo of them.

*Unless your "computer" is literally a data storage device (ie storage server).

For spinning rust disk keep in mind that the drives marked for sale as external HDD have failed more tests than the ones sold as internal drives. All the drives have some sort of defect, this is normal from the factory but they put the worst ones in external enclosures and sell those at a lower price.

For SSD or HDD preforming a monthly surface scan can generally protect you from the chance of bit rot because you force the device to read over every sector on the drive. If and when an error on the read is detected the device will automatically recover. Now over time if the problem gets worse the drive may fail to recover the damaged sector but this is why you want to do the surface scan often enough to protect your data.

Offsite backup is cheap for $50 you get a year of backblaze unlimited storage there is no reason not to have your data protected.

I went to SuperDuper and they do NOT support windows but give you a link to AIOMI backup. Which they claim is equal in value. I personally use CloneZilla a re-badged version of Partition Magic at work. It handles Linux and Windows GPT included. I can't speak for MAC, never tried it.
