Despite looking like one, and packing the same engine as one, this mk4 Golf GTI is NOT an anniversary model.

Confused? So is Amber from @Driven247 !

She's been told by people who've never seen the car that it's only got 150bhp, yet from her research she's meant to have 180bhp.
There's only one way to settle this...

0:00 - intro & why this Golf might be odd!
6:15 - run 1
8:19 - run 2
14:25 - breaking the news to Amber

Thanks for a great time…or maybe it wasn’t so great because of the results…ha ha!

Either way, we found some info out for sure, thanks for having me and my GTI!

Hello, I have experience fixing an AUQ and tuning it too. A smoke test would determine if there are any boost leaks and a data log would determine what is going on boost pressure and air fuel ratio wise.

It's very common for these engines to suffer boost leaks from lots of plastic and rubber hoses that haven't aged well.

I wouldn't go guessing and throwing parts at it until it had been scanned with vcds, data logged and smoke tested.

Hope this helps
Ben

The later 1.8t 2003, came standard with 180 bhp and a six speed box, ( same as the anniversary but with 5 doors) also had the red “I”. This engine was also used in the lower power Audi Tt
A remap takes these to about 220

1.8T came with 148bhp 180bhp 210bhp and 225bhp....

Enough variations to make an enthusiast's head hurt 😂

The look of abject horror when Amber ask you if you want to fix it was priceless

AUQ is always 180ps. AUM drive by wire is always 150ps. Probably the n75 valve is on its way out and not controlling boost properly. The first thing to do is get it on vcds or similar to pull codes.

Brilliant video mate, love the way you explain things in a Janet & John way 🙌 to help us old people. Keep up the good work 👏

Anorak at the ready…150 had 5 speed and solid rear discs, 180 had 6 speed and vented rear discs

As a woman, who drives a mk4 golf and who has the 1.8t high on her wish list, I thank you and salute you.

You need the fan on the intercooler behind the right hand grill, inlet temps will be through the roof and pulling loads of timing with out, plus they need really good fuel, 97plus octane. Also need to log requested and actual boost as they suffer from many split breather hoses under the inlet manifold and split diverter valve diaphragms.

Good to see standing up for the women, you can get the MK4 with 150, 180 hp but not the 225 engine and I have an 03 seat Leon cupra with auq code which is 180hp standard

I mean, about the confusion about models/trims et cetera, don't forget that back in those days, you -could- specify you car and if the dealer was in good relations with the mothership, you could get combinations that were unheard of. And not just colors, exterior and interior decorations. Even engines.

If you read the label on the MAF it says Bosch Remanufactured, so it has been replaced at some point ❤

My money is on the n75 valve.Quite common failure and all the vacum pipes too.

Great to see Amber on your channel - I watched a few of her videos after you mentioned her channel recently - I'm very much in favour of the love of cars to be shared widely and have encouraged my daughte to learn more and do 'daily' checks (which I'm not great at tbh!)
Another great video Kitch :-)

According to badger 5 the 1.8t hates being run on 95 octane.. the knock on them is ridiculas which may explain the overfueling and black smoke if run on 95 octane

That black clag and smell of miniature railway - must be running rich. Reminds me of track days

I'm one of them who said it was the 150bhp but she proved me wrong

Definitely a bit poorly, but that is the mintiest Mk4 I have seen in a long while.

I own a 5 doors 2000 MK4 Golf GTI 150hp ARZ engine code, 5 speed gearbox (02J) WITH the drive by wire but without cruise control ( go figure...)
So yes Amber is right, you can have a 180 without the anniversary with the 2003 models.

Hope she will fix it easily, try the VCDS diag software it's probably the N75 valve acting silly (it was on mine).

Love the videos keep up the good work ^^
