good to know there's lots of warning before the explosion. If that screaming of the compromised vacuum isn't enough to make you run, nothing will.

Best video ever on the "retiring" of an MRI. Pull the plug on the vacuum jacket insulation keeping that liquid helium inside and see what happens...

That noise is just the beginning! The MRI is just "warming up" for the grand finale!!!! That "pucking" noise is metal bulging in preparation of splitting a seam! I have scrapped a LOT of MRIs. That model probably weighs more than 7, 000 pounds, failure to launch! I would guess the guys found a way to obstruct the cupola quench pipe exit for when the burst disc ruptures, so it couldn't vent safely! I used to pay around 1200 to 3000 dollars for an MRI. In 2008 scrap was at a ridiculous high, especially the old Oxford dual-cryo model! Stainless was about $1.85 a POUND! Anyway I bought 3 MRIs from AK Specialty Vehicles for around $4000.00. In 4 days, I made the most money in that short of time in my entire life!! I ended up putting more than $47, 000, clear, in my pocket in less than a week!

One of my biggest fears is having an MRI scanner explode while in usage. Glad to know there is a minute of warning before it actually does.

Wow it's amazing how much force that explosion created to knock that huge magnet off of its trailer. Awesome video.

Will this be added to my medical bill?

kids in asia could have eaten those mri scanner

And that is where it stayed for all eternity unless you have a backhoe capable of picking up a 5k+ magnet

One of the best videos on Youtube. The laughing at the end was the same as me hahaha! I love it

The video must be called "The new Cryo-Magnetic engine startup and fail takeoff"😂

they "destroyed" the vacuum jacket by pulling the rope....

I didn't know mri machines screamed when they die.

This is not supposed to happen normally. The vent pipes are built to handle the level of rapid expansion of liquid helium without the helium vessel exploding.
Also even if the helium vessel breaks, the outer vacuum vessel should be able to contain the explosion and the high pressure.

Wonder which company's MRI was this. Looks shorter than normal ones.

"Mrs. Crabapple, your son has damage to his vertebrae."

"Oh, no! What did the scan show?"

"Everything."

Wow. Those things weigh as much as a subway car and the fact the explosion blew it off the trailer like it was nothing is mind blowing

Travis Sylvester, thanks for sharing. Any idea of the volume of liquid helium that was still left within the cryostat before you pulled he vacuum seal?

Where did you manage to get an MRI machine?

How do you even transport it without it getting stuck to the equipment used to move it. I don’t know of any vehicles that are made from 100% non ferromagnetic materials.

That was one that was properly ramped down still with the helium an ln2 unside. I would have charged it up and did all kinds cool experiments with it. Then either sold it whole or recycled the helium and superconducting core. That was about 8 to 15k up in smoke....
