Prior to MR scanner magnet quench, bright yellow strings with ferrous paper clips were taped to ceiling and walls. A long ferrous chain was secured in the control room and passed through a wave guide on axis with the magnet bore. When the quench button was pressed, nothing happened. Service personnel checked the circuits and were able to quench the magnet.

Wow it's incredible how fast it actually happens. I guess it shows how critical the temperature is to the coil to keep working.

A quench is when helium is quickly released from the MR machine, causing the machine to be non-superconductive and eliminating the magnetic field. Quenching an MR machine is performed only in dire circumstances. Quenching could cause damage to the coils, sometimes beyond repair. One MR machine can cost in the millions of dollars. If the safety of the patient or any person in the scan room is in jeopardy and quick action is needed to save their lives, a quench is performed. Another situation where a quench is needed is during a fire so that firefighting personnel can safely enter the room with all their metal equipment.

For everyone who is confused by this, this is a failure due to helium leaking out (look at the top of the machine when the gas is released at the top) causing the machine unable to cool coil into a superconductivity temperature.
Once the magnetic coil lost its superconductivity temperature, it is unable to produce anymore magnetic field due to coil winding suddenly develop a resistance (from having no resistance) which cause the magnetic field to collapse (machine unable to pull rope tied with paper clip anymore and drops it).

The danger here is helium being released that could potentially displace oxygen, hence suffocation due to lack of oxygen could occurred even though helium usually rise to the top (which is why ppl is ducking down at gtfo of the room).

This is from my quick google-fu.

Here from Vsause. I've never seen a collapsing magnetic field before, that was impressive.

some years ago i worked on the construction of the room an MRI sits in and the Faraday cage that that room sits inside of. when working in the room with steel toe capped boots on you could feel the magnet pulling at your feet as you walked. when commissioning the MRI the techs would play with it by putting an aluminium sheet on its edge inside the bed of the MRI and the watch as it fell over in slow motion as it interacted with the magnetic field .

Great video! Shows the importance of safety during a quench. 👍

Got a surplus one in the garage acting up and I can't shut it down with the button thingy. Where do I drill?

Love how the ladders just chill in there

Why do they run away when the paper clips start to fall?

You know shit hit the fan when you hear a slight hissing and the strings begin to relax lol

I bet speccing non ferrous fittings for those cabinets was a pain in the ass,

So does this destroy the MRI machine completely or can it be "recharged" and continue in service after being serviced?

warum dampft das denn so? Muss das MRT gekühlt werden? Warum muss es gekühlt werden? Warum so schlagartig? Wer kann mir das bitte erklären. Danke

Why were those guys running for their lives?

jeez it failed the first time? was this a testing/installation phase? is the helium normally quenched directly into the room like that? my guess is no.

Wait so the emergency stop button didn't work? And personnel had to shut it down manually?

How is that ladder just chilling tho. Is it aluminum...? Is aluminum not magnetic? Okay fine I'll google it
