Yamaha MT-09 vs YZF R6 | SUPERSPORT or HYPER NAKED?

Today I compare the Yamaha MT-09 Hyper Naked bike to the Yamaha YZF R6 Super Sport bike!
The Yamaha R6 is a racing styling motorcycle designed for performance, while the Yamaha MT-09 is more geared towards comfort with a sporty side. In todays video I compare back to back the Yamaha MT09 and Yamaha R6 to see which bike is better and to find out what makes each bike so good!

The Yamaha MT09 is a great bike with a comfortable riding position and a relaxed riding feel. Suspension absorbs bumps well and it takes turns with ease. Also the MT09 has more low end torque which means wheelies can happen in 1st and 2nd gear all day long!

Riding the Yamaha R6 back to back with the MT09 I did notice a huge difference. The suspension is much stiffer and I felt bumps way more. And taking faster turns, the R6 did seem much easier to go through the turns at a quicker speed. It felt like it wanted to just keep going faster. The R6 lacks a ton of bottom end power and that is noticeable while getting under way. But I felt the top end just wanted to keep ripping till redline! The MT09 falls a bit flat in higher RPM, while the R6 just pulls.

In our small 1sr and 2nd gear drag race between the MT09 and YZF R6, there was a substantial difference. When both bikes were in the same gear (2nd) the MT09 pulls ahead super quick. At the end of the runway the R6 started gaining on the MT09. But we ran out of space. With the R6 in 1st comparing it to 2nd on the MT09, they were nearly neck and neck.

Yamaha MT-09 vs. YZF R6 | SUPERSPORT or HYPER NAKED?

Both bikes seemed pretty comfortable as far as seating position. A bit more upright on the MT09 with less weight on your arms. The R6 you're leaning forward a bit more with extra weight on your arms. I was actually equally comfortable on both bikes in all honesty. The MT09 seat felt like I kept sliding forward just a bit, while the R6 seat felt flatter. So the r6 seat is more comfortable, but the MT09 arm position is more comfortable.

Overall Yamaha makes fantastic bikes in every single segment. I love my R6 and do prefer the race style bikes for the track and mountain road trips I do. And I'll sacrifice some of the daily riding comfort to gain that extra performance. If you're not looking to take your bike to the track and have more commuting miles planned, the MT09's adding comfort and usable torque will be much appreciated.

While my YZF R6 is a 2007 model year, it's pretty much the same as a 2020 R6 in the sense of it being a sportbike from Yamaha. The 2020 MT09 is pretty much the same as the previous years FZ09 as well.

So I'm using these two bikes more to compare the naked style upright sportbike to the super sport race style street bike.

Thanks to my friend Cameron for lending the bike!! And he said I could do some wheelie s ;)

I commute with my FZ 09 daily, about 30 miles each way. I was shocked at how much nicer the ride is with earplugs. It cuts fatigue in half.

MT09 way more comfortable, fun at street speeds and cheaper

This really helped my decision on a super sport or naked street sport. Leaning towards the FZ09 now.

I like the Torque of the MT09 and the look of the R6. R6 with MT09 engine would make a beast IMO

Great video. Nice comparison. The differences are really apparent and comes through on the video which is hard to notice sometimes. Both good bikes, depends on what the rider wants.

That’s weird I was watching your Tacoma videos 6 months ago now I’m looking up MT09 stuff because I just bought one and here you are! Lol

Unfortunately the newer model MT-09 has picked up some weight with the addition of ABS, etc, but the 2014 FZ-09 which I have rolled off the dealer floor at 415lbs wet, which is 4lbs lighter than the R6. With all of the mods I’ve done, including Akrapović carbon exhaust, Evotech fender eliminator and passenger peg block off plates, Galfer wave rotors and smaller LED blinkers, I think mine is down to closer to 405, which is almost 20lbs lighter than the 2020. I will add that while the overall ergos are comfortable, the seat foam itself is NOT comfortable for long rides. At least it’s easier to stand up while riding on the FZ/MT

R6: Track toy; corner, top end power
MT09: Street toy; drag/wheelie, bottom end grunt

Technically they're both sport bikes. However, the R6 is categorized as a supersport

Really good video, I’ve been trying to decide to either go the MT-09 or R6 and I think you’ve definitely helped me choose. Will be going the MT. For so long I’ve thought the R6 was the only bike I wanted but after what you’ve said the MT sounds like the better option. R6 = race bike concerted to road, MT = bike for anything.

I can tell you. I have had several supersports, a 2014 FZ09 and now a 2020 MT09. Also had two GSXS 750s (nakeds). I not only do in town riding and commuting, but also canyons. These bikes are not just suited for more comfortable riding... except for the lack of power comparatively, the MT is absolutely the better canyon bike too with much less energy expended in riding spirited

2008+ r6 got quite a few changes, they kind of fixed the low rev torque, it accelerates faster, a lot better for riding around town etc.

"The MT09 will smoke the R6 on a slow speed drag race".. yet the 0-60 is identical and the R6 has a .3s faster quarter mile.. I understand the MT09 is torquey and definitely a ton of fun.. but as far as performance, if you don't short shift the R6, it'll have the MT09 for sure. The driver has a huge impact on the bike.. also hence the "i can't do a wheelie on this".. you gotta learn how to ride that bad boy.

I love me that R6 especially hitting the a nice intermediate bike for the highway not to big but big enough to give you a run for your money

This is gonna be my setup in weeks. Purchased a 2018 MT09 and put up my s1000r for sale with intention to swap it for an 2017 R6. Used to commute on the s1000r but the mt09 is a much better bike for commuting. 1000cc is too much for a commuter bike

Great video. I swapped my 09 R1 for a 2019 MT09 and haven’t looked back. Great commuter bike and weekend toy with Full titanium akrapovic 👌
