Nick Vallelonga , Tony Lip's son, had a lot of material to search from including letters, tapes and videos of Dr Shirley telling his own story. So it's clear that what's on the movie really happened in real life. The movie is based on their 8O days first trip together but on the following year they did another one over entire USA that lasted one year. It's obvious that they had a LOT stories / experiences to tell. GREAT movie, fantastic screenplay and an amazing soundtrack. Definatly the best movie I've seen in years.

Hollywood embellishes all biographies. That’s not the point.
The point is to remember the person.
He sounds like a special man who became successful during turbulent times for people of color.
He should be remembered.

I remember seeing this movie on a school field trip a few months ago. It was a great movie and my friends loved it!

The movie poster says, "Inspired by a true friendship." It's a story, not a documentary, so the question is more along the lines of "Did it get the friendship right?" which it seems it did.

Main thing Don Shirley's family's saying is that Don was more in touch with his family than the movie said. Honestly, don't know how big of a deal this part is to the story. And the story is what went on between the two from Tony Vallelonga's side. It is possible Don Shirley said he's not in contact with his brother just to avoid conversation. And regarding the chicken too. He may have said it to avoid the stereotype. There's no way for Shirley's brother or nephew to know what went on between the two so they can't say it's complete false.
And yes, it is possible Tony Vallelonga may have exaggerated his side of the story. He seemed like the type with all the photos he took with other famous people. Him saying to wait until Shirley is dead to make the movie kinda proves it. But this is movie "BASED ON" Tony Vallelonga's recollection. Based on his recordings and stories and letters. And audience take it as such.

Victor Hugo Green (a Black man) wrote the Green Book. He was a postal worker in the Bronx during the Jim Crow era.
