I think it's arthurs denial and grief taking full control and driving chaos to being dark and leading him down to an evil path subconciously because if you look at what camelot is in the manga of four knightss of the apocalypse its essentialy a false reality where people can see their loved ones who died, or they can live out what was never real, but the people who are conjured within camelot never grow old or change .Because reality is too hard to bear for these people since they lost so much. And arthur is stopping at nothing even defying what destiny and fate lays out by using guineverre's power. And I believe merlin took away the full power of chaos from arthur to make sure he wouldn't go too far, and that's why arthur is obsessed with merlin, not that he loves her but because she's taking away the full potential he can possess with chaos. One of the key concepts that seven deadly sins always had was the emotional states of characters, like the reason why meliodas could never control his full power is because his wrath was too much in the first season.so it makes sense arthurs greif is whats causing him to be the villan. And i believe the 4 knights help him overcome that greif and that arthur in the end will take himself out to make sure chaos dosen't run rampant
