Owning the new Toyota Land Cruiser 2.8 Auto 70-series for just a few weeks has revealed a car that is different in ways I could not have imagined.

On-Line Training for Overlanders:

4xOverland is the world's first global 4WD adventure off-road motoring channel. Established in 1996, it is hosted by well-known 4x4 writer, explorer and filmmaker, Andrew St Pierre White. AKA: ASPW.

I think your wife should narrate; she is super funny and to the point!

Being in Canada I am immensely envious of being able to walk into a Toyota dealer and being able to buy a troopy
Looking forward to the build!!!

That vibration at 1500rpm under light throttle is an issue with the Toyota Auto transmission... We had the exact same issue with our 2022 Prado. It got worse over time and Toyota did a software patch that was meant to fix it but it made the box worse. It shuddered and nudged all the time afterwards. It drove us insane which was precisely why we got rid of it and bought a manual 76. This is what I feared with the introduction of the auto. Keep an eye on it Andrew and please keep the community updated on this behaviour and if it gets worse.

I think the easiest work around for the dash cover and light sensor problem is to do a little modification to the cover by cutting and renewing a little half circle to accommodate the sensor. It might not look as clean but might get the job done 🤷🏻‍♂️. I’m really looking forward to this build series because I can’t afford to replace my thirteen year old Prado 150 so I’m going to have to experience the joy of a new 4X4 vicariously through you! ❤

Interesting with gear changes I notice our work hilux auto is horrible unloaded but when we add weight and a load etc it feels fantastic. Will be interested to see if it smooths out with the weight of your build

Congratulations Andrew. Looking forward to the build to see what new ideas you come up with. Particularly interested in the Headspace Campers roof conversion.

Between you, Mrs 4xoverland and Ronny we have all the honest reviews we need on the new 70.
Edit, just got to the radio antenna... that is an upgrade. I daily drive a 31 year old Hilux Surf, and I mean this quite literally, the only thing not working is the automatic antenna. Not only does it not work, but it makes a ridiculous noise every time I turn accessory on. Do people still listen to FM in their cars? I just stream music and listen to podcasts. All you need is a simple bluetooth head unit for that.

Hey Andrew - the 2.8 is substantially fasterunloaded and fully loaded. There is a drag race by fullboost and AIC on youtube where you can see this practically

Congratulations Andrew🎉
The only reason for the larger side indicator repeaters lights is due to the GVM upgrade to 3510kg which changes the classification of the vehicle.
Plus with the new 2025 Australian Emissions Laws there would be a strong chance the 70series wouldn't pass, possibly another reason for the V8 being dropped from the range!!

I think the move to the 2.8L is a good idea. as you said it's shared with the Hilux, Hiace (and even the coaster). so i reckon it's an ubiquitous engine in desolate parts of the world. in your experience in Africa for example; would the 2.8 have more available spare parts than the V8?

You may still use the dash cover, get a leather expert to make a hole on the cover so that when you push it down to the windscreen that lump gets exposed through the hole and you can still enjoy your space solutions and the dash eluminates nicely.
